All mission are possible on all diffuculties, some require you to restart a few times to get the drift.
Tib Wars is really mild compared to other games diffuculty, looking at starcraft 2 brutal
So while it might not be mathematically impossible (or it might..) I did some searching around and found many threads on various forums complaining about this specific mission. I tried various different strategies, such as attacking the ships early, building a defensive line to the east and capturing materials north of the starting position and what not, none of them worked. The AI clearly cheats in this mission and will swarm you with endless waves. While I could build a defensive line fast and get my base set up, eventually the resources would run out and then it would be game over anyway. Tried sending a commando into the enemy base, but apparently the commando was very weak (while in the previous mission where you had a commando, he was basically unstoppable..)
Idk, I restarted maybe 10 times and then I realized, why am I wasting time on this? I cheated and gave myself 1,000,000,000 $ and then built like 50 airports.
For Alexandria, I did the laziest tactic I could think of: camp in my base until all the tiberium is collected, ignore the tech building and finish up all my money on mammoths. Then, sell everything (more money & inf) and move everyone in one big group to the objectives.
For Croatia, I ended up capturing the armor base before rescuing the convoy. Build Nod tanks (flame tanks) and wipe out the infantry base. Only after that, I recover the gdi MCV and use it to take out the airbase.
Sarajevo was tough, I finished it after losing half of my base and capture some nod buildings so I can base creep from there. I took a lot of losses and finally win by attrition. It's doable, but expect heavy casualties and a long slog.
Which one was Munich? If it's the mission where the aliens built a base across the river then what I did was send a commando to jump across and nuke the drone platform. The base falls as soon as it gets destroyed. Better do it as soon as possible before the scrin bolsters their defenses.
I don't think the other missions gave me trouble. The main thing to know is that patch 1.09 was meant to balance multiplayer and it broke the singleplayer so you're probably right, they didn't playtest the patch on the missions.
What worked for me in this particular mission was to tech as hard and fast as possible so I could get the health upgrade for my Zone units. My reasoning was that since my tiberium will run out fast, I can't afford to rush but will instead have to invest in the sturdiest units at minimal cost, or at least minimise my losses. The Zone units supposedly regen health when idle, so I built my strategy around that.
I took 3 infantry units and made them build foxholes into a loose triangle shape with the one point facing my base, then I stuck 3 rocket launcher units in there with them. Then I built 2 anti-tank turrets behind each side of the foxholes so they would not be the first targets, and then I put 2 anti-infantry turrets behind them for good measure. Slowly but surely I got a few Zone units together to take the brunt of the attack while my defences hammered the attackers from behind them. I found it best to have the Zone units somewhat parallel to the 2 foxholes because then the enemies would be in full range of my units combined fire.
I wanted to set down a few more such forward bases, but I noticed I only had enough resources for 2 such formations if I wanted to build up an attack force around them at the same time. The turrets won't survive on their own for long without infantry backing them up.
At first I was hoping to just use plain infantry and rockets since they gain experience in the foxholes, but they would die quite quickly to most everything, and the paratroopers are not only useless but also expensive. The Zone units are tough but will die immediately to any kind of flamethrower unit in swathes, so it's best to just advance slowly with them. Be sure you are ready to destroy the incoming aircraft after you sink the ships, because they carry flamethrower units.
When I had the money, I took my Mammoth units to flank the base while destroying the ships and made a pincer attack with my Zone units meeting the tanks from the other side. I went on the offensive with around 20 Zone units and 5-10 Mammoth tanks, and once I managed to snipe a few of their structures it went quite smoothly.
