A storm column that costs 3000 gets destroyed in a 1v1 battle by an Avatar that costs 2200.
The storm column is the worst tier 3 base defense. It is somewhat good at dealing with air quickly but even then 5 normal AA base defenses (which cost also 3000 in total, 5×600) would do a better job.
Tripods do seem pretty weak considering the price. Not really sure where that 3000 is coming from to be honest.
Given the Storm Towers versatility, I wouldnt say that 3000 is necessarily overpriced though.
You are pitting the Obelisk against an ideal 1v1 opponent, not against literally a handful of rocket squads that can use the Obelisks garbage versatility against it.
- Most expensive out of the tier 3 base defenses.
- Due to its price it's not really good for multi MCV tactics (you simply spend too much - money).
- If you play against people, as soon as you place it your opponent will move to another unprotected place to attack it and you've spent 3000 on a static base defense that won't do anything.
- 1v1 it loses to an Obelisk or a Sonic Emitter while being the most expensive one.
- Deals the least damage to tanks out of all tier 3 base defenses.
- You cannot place Storm Columns next to each other (due to the Ion Storm they cause - it makes you unable to place buildings unless you power down the Storm Column beforehand which means it won't shoot for some time).
It does not matter if it's better against infantry than Obelisk or Sonic Emitter. All things considered, you get less for your money. Thing is, the Nod player will have an easier time defending ANY tank + infantry attack with Obelisks + Shredder Turrets than the Scrin player with Storm Columns + Buzzer hives. In both Nod's/Scrin's case the Shredder Turrets/Buzzer hives will kill the infantry very easily, however, while the Obelisks will also deal with tanks very easily, the Storm Column will not (due to low damage output - lowest damage output against tanks out of the tier 3 base defenses). Where the Obelisk lacks in efficiency (against infantry) the Nod players can make Shredder turrets. The Scrin players cannot supplement the inefficiency of the Storm column against tanks with any other base defense.
