Which campaign should I play first?
Does it matter?

It doesn't matter which you play first. There's SOME intertwining but the end of each campaign, story wise, nullify each other if memory serves.

Events in both sides campaigns are canon, so either one is fine, though it makes more sense to play NOD first

That's not entirely accurate, the canon part.

They do not in CnC3, but they did in the previous titles. Here, they only add more viewpoints, providing greater insight into what exactly happened in TW3. GDI thinks they've saved the world, Nod thinks they've finally hijacked their ultimate objective from the aliens, and the Scrin are аrsеblasted because what the former two thought to be an invasion force were actually just your ol' mining workers, and in a colossal feat of nerdrage they call their big daddy in the army, asking him to whoop badrudeevil bully Kane's butt for beating them up and taking all their toys.

Imo, NOD has definitely most impressive storyline, so that would be +1 for you to start off with NOD.

well gdi campaign kinda starts as a tutorial so i guess it should be first but nod is more interesting

GDI > NOD > SCRIN is the "proper" order tho their "stories" intertwine with each other.
you unlock SCRIN campaign by completing both GDI and NOD campaigns btw

Incorrect. All campaigns are canon. The story is unique in that you see the same conflict from multiple angles. Nod is by far the most interesting campaign of the three, but GDI is an excellent choice if you are new to the series because it incorporates tutorials into some missions.

That's simply not true. There are elements in each campaign that conflict with each other.
