Some tips.
For big jumps Lara always need to run a minimum of 1 square beforing she can jump.
She won't jump before running at least 1 square if she was still.
(If you pay attention you'll notice the game is based on a grid of these squares and at some point you get used to her movements in this grid system).
It really takes time getting used to, but they are very unique and rewarding. Give it another go, watch some videos. But, it is not for everyone. It might really not be your cup of tea, and that's fine as well. But the game is not broken or weird. It is just different and unique.

Never miss a big jump:
1. Walk to any edge (she won't fall if you're holding walk button)
2. On tank controls OR with weapons on modern, tap back, she will hop back exactly 1 square.
3. Run forward holding jump button, since she can only jump after running at least 1 square she will jump at the edge, making the biggest jumps possible always hit.
The attempt at making "modern" controls is a nice try from the devs, but really hard to do in a game that wasn't designed for them, i recommend learning to use the tank controls.
If a 7 year old could do it in 1996 i'm sure you can too.
