Oh yeah the classic tank controls, that's what you need to master. This game is known for it's jumping difficulty. The game is built out in such a way that ledges are spaced by blocks, so once you get your bearings for jumping you'll know just by looking what ledges you can grab and can't grab. Hard to master, but enjoyable once you do.
Try doing some running jumps in a row, you'll notice each time she lands she does two steps before jumping again. If you don't hold jump, you can make her jump after the third or fourth jump, and so on, but never the first.
Originally TR1 was more finicky with running jumps; she could only do so after she steps with her right foot but not the left (or perhaps the other way around). In 2 and 3 she can do it after either step and this was backported to TR1 in the remaster.
For some reason, "Alt Gr" behaves like jumping + grabbing
Left "Alt" makes Lara jump correctly even if you keep it pressed
For a full length jump, walk to a ledge, tap backwards once, press forward and then hold jump and she will jump more or less the furthest distance possible.
