They should absolutely not change the outdated, grid based tank controls of the originals and by the trailer, it's obvious they won't. It's a 1:1 recreation and this is not a remake. It's meant as a throw back.. for old fans or new fans to experience how those games were back in the day.
Sometimes it's ok for a game to be jenky. You have to keep in mind you are playing a game from 1996 before Super Mario 64 came out.
It's part of the history to experience the solutions the developers were coming up with to work with the limitations of the technology.
Not to mention AC and Uncharted came out on a time in which challenge in jumping wasn't a thing any more.. those games basically have automatic jumps that targets the landing automatically.. making really hard to miss.
Classic Tomb Raider is all about positioning and careful manual jumps.
A neutral jumps reaches any edge two spaces high, a directional jump always clears a gap one space wide, a running jump clears a gap two spaces wide.
Hopping back with Down is enough for a run-up for a running jump.
You can hold the Jump button to jump whenever Lara can. You hold the Action button to hold onto edges and ladders.
You run to a wall but miss the button? Just sidestep in front of it.
For someone used to modern controls, this would throw them off at first; it's simply about getting used to them. They're not as horrible as people make it out to be.
Players can experience the journey their own way, with the ability to toggle on the fly between enhanced and original graphics, as well as switch between classic and modern joystick control schemes. Fans will also discover a variety of quality-of-life improvements, including camera lock-on and achievements.

This I feel is the best option. For the original fans, they can use the tank controls they love. For new or younger players, they can play it with modern controls. So everyone should be happy, but I'm sure some will still complain that new players should just "git gud".
What I think they could do is maybe make some movement faster to cut some boring wait like the turning of Lara on herself, the change of direction, the item picking..
