As many of you know, modern controls can be more comfortable in many situations, but there are movements that require the activation of weapons and others such as rotation and lateral movement that are not available.
Additionally, the back jump during weapon activation requires a rest state and is a pain when enemies attack you and you are frantic.
There are many people who in different forums commented that it would be nice to use the D-pad to use the tank controls and the joystick for modern controls. In the link that I have given you there is a suggestion option. If you are interested in having the option of using the crosshead as a tank and the joystick as a modern control, you can write in the suggestions. If there are many of us, maybe they will listen to us.
But still right now modern controls feel like an attempt by a modder and not by a studio. Heck, I think modders attempt at fixing the classic controls with OpenLara did a somewhat better job. Less fluent but I think it played a bit better and more consistent.
Your idea of having tank controls on the D-pad is actually brilliant. Add a function key where you can side step when using modern controls as well and the only thing remaining to fix is probably how the camera behaves.
Yeah. since it directly affects movement, it really sh*ts the bed when you reach a place where the camera can't move freely, meaning you can't properly control the character either. Basic stuff for a game that relies on precision and extremely specific jumps.
It really feels like an experiment at this point than a well thought out control scheme.
Sounds exactly like the problems faced playing on an emulator, it can't be played.
I hoped it would have been resolved but obviously not. Will keep a look out for update on controls, until then I am not buying it!
I agree, modern controls are at some essential points incompatible with the game. But actually, I am so used to this type of controls, I really have a much harder time using the tank-controls.... - It makes me stop playing currently - Please fix!
Which is exactly why the game was made with tank controls. There are many places in these games where the camera moves cinematically and it's important to always know how to control Lara (tank controls are consistent) during puzzles and traps that can kill you while the camera is panning in the area.
Auto switch to a new target once the current one is dead, and really improve the responsiveness of the jump. The delay is so frustrating.
If it at least had those for modern controls, I imagine it would lead to a much better experience.
When they work they are great, but it's clear that they barely play tested it (I guess mostly because "hey, if you don't like it, pick the classic scheme). I think a way to switch between the two on the fly (having the d-pad being tank controls mentioned above is a great idea) would do wonders with it. Or at least have a strafe button. Side stepping is way too important to remove it from the modern control scheme.
"I figured out how the camera works perfect. Up, Down, Circle around, like you want.
I hold the Pistols in her hands. With that you must run around with pistols, but the camera moving with that is like she should do without that."
[Paste in from another thread]
Well, I bought the game and I can tell you, from my experience the tank controls are far easier to use as they incorporate all the moves. We are used to fine faster movement now so the slow movement and awkward turning will take some getting used to.
The only issue is that there was no camera control then so the camera moves with Lara.
Modern controls for me are so awkward they are no good, I'd die every minute with them, not very user friendly.
But, the most surprising to me is that the overall ease is with keyboard, drawing guns and action on the mouse.
Tank or keyboard for me
It would be so much better if the tank controls had the movement of modern or mouse and keyboard, smooth, fast and accurate instead of clunky and slow. would be worth patching that in to make the overall experience perfect 👌
Funny enough, these controls that apparently inspired them, weren't bundled with a buggy camera mess xD.
However the camera is still getting stuck on some low roof areas, and in some areas they've added crazy rock formations into the roof that's really low down and it feels claustrophobic but chances are the camera is going to get caught on it, so they should either remove those rock formations or just give the roof more rocky textures.
I can move around better but i'm still struggling in Combat to shoot, jump, roll, and move the camera at the same time. It also needs to go back to keeping the pistols up and not using the R Mouse Button because i constantly keep letting go and it's annoying. We can just press Q on the keyboard on PC next to the WASD keys to keep them up, then it frees up the R Mouse Button which we can then use for Roll and i put roll on the M Mouse Button and it's more comfortable using the mouse for Rolling.
Movement needs to the be the same when weapons are equipped and unequipped too it makes no sense for Hop Back to only be used when weapons are equipped because we use it when not in combat too, Have the Devs ever played Tomb Raider before? LOL.
We still need Side Step too to line up our jumps and the angle at which we're jumping and grabbing, so keep walk and side step in the game, walk currently stops working on and off too with the Classic aka Tank Controls too. It's clunky having to run around in a circle several times just to try and line things up which is just slowing me down, we don't only use it just to line ourselves up to objects and switches LOL.
All the interactions need to be quick to press so we can make precise and snappy motions because we need to be fast. The Classic Controls aka Tank Controls are the way they are for a reason you can't further simplify it. I think the Modern Controls are too fluid and it's what's making it difficult to jump and roll in the direction i want to go while in combat and i can't jump at an angle as i'm running about..
Then i'd have to constantly keep trying to keep the camera at a certain angle just so Lara doesn't Hop Back, which is also a problem when i'm standing in a certain spot and i just want to run in any direction other than the one i'm facing. She's probably going to Hop Back so i have to first run forward then circle around but it's causing the biggest problems when in Combat when we need to just act not think and i'll just end up running myself into something or falling down a very steep ledge :P
It's also impossible to do the double gun bang bang thing i cant angle Lara to get her to do it and that's the coolest part about her pistols, and it's because it's too fluid when she's turning trying to constantly swivel in a circle, all it will do it end up making you run forward or around and mess you up.
Just keep it as accurate to the fine movements of classic controls as possible keep the movements more simple because of how you have to move with the flow of the grid the way the game and all the obstacles are made. You press left or right she moves and inch, you quickly tap forward she does a smaller step forward and doesn't try to swivel.
The movements don't need Sensitivity Controls either it's then TOO sensitive if you put it past Sensitivity 3 or 4 which is about what the Tank Controls are, the camera in the Modern Controls and everything else moves great at the same sensitivity as the classic :P. I'd love to use it Devs for the better movement but if the finished result is still too fluid i'll stick to Tank.
