Are tank controls that bad?

I never did play the originals since I was around a baby when the games dropped. I hear modern controls is bad & doesn't function properly. Are tank controls that bad to learn? I am on the fence about buying it mainly due to the controls. I hated tank controls in the original Resident Evil games but I don't know if that was just bad implementation

the modern controls are mostly fine, they just take some getting used to, they could use some improvements which will no doubt come with updates

no they are fine imo.
i recently started playing Tomb Raider 4 through PS1 emulator, and i have to say having the right analogue dedicated to looking around is a massive improvement.
maybe because im a 90s kid? idk but no complaints from me.

Are the modern controls missing any inputs? I hear they may be missing stuff like backsteps or some dodges

It's less bad than resident evil because Lara auto aims at all enemies.

The most annoying thing is that you can't easily turn the camera around to see the environment.

You will also feel that movement is much slower because you have to turn her using the left/right keys.

If only they added a key for us to force Lara to look at the camera direction modern controls would be massively better, she almost does this when holding the gun key but it's not perfect and fails, and also the camera tries to auto rotate to the direction she's moving which is also infuriating.

yeh back steps cannot be used with modern controls (and also back jumps)

That's because she automatically turn left or right when you press A or D, so she doesn't strafe and you can't do side jumps/steps.

When you press S she turns back (180 degrees) instead of back stepping which makes a lot of jumps annoying since her back step is the perfect distance you need to get speed and jump further in a lot of places.
She does back step however when you hold the gun button, but a lot of times this failed and she turned around even with the guns in the hand.

I tried modern controls and cannot play the game with it. These games were made with tank controls in mind so I think it is better to play them with tank controls.

tank control is the way it was intended to play. It's not bad but requires some time to get used to.

I feel like gamepad + tank control is the best way to play as you can look around with the right analog stick. KB/M + tank control is strictly old school. there is no mouse look option.

tank control feels like the original. modern control doesn't event fit for the lala's house(tutorial).
