The point is that the original DOS/ATI PC versions of Tomb Raider 1 had higher quality versions of the original sound effects, and they did not bring them over to this one, instead porting the lower quality PS1 version.
So it's not about changing the sound effects, it's about not using the high quality original PC versions rather than PS1.

I have checked on the other release on steam, she did indeed not say anything at pickups.
But the sounds of her colliding into terrain while running or jumping are gone, the gasping sound when surfacing is gone, the shimmying sound is wrong and the underwater "bubble" sound seems like part of the underwater sound loop rather than synchronized with the bubbles emitted from Lara
