TR3 Meteorite Cavern final gate doesn't open

The one just before the helicopter. When I go around the final corner and can see the helicopter it closes. When I then backtrack into the ice cavern slope and use the drone to check the gate it's open again. But then it closes once more when I go around the final corner.

Save my little sanity, don't make me run in circles again killing this boring and annoying boss with pistols only :P

Happened to me. Wait for the helicopter to land, there should be someone coming to attack you. Kill him and the gate should open.

Thanks, waiting did the trick. Nobody came but after 30sec or so just standing there the gate opened.

that also got me confused, would have been better if there wasn't a gate, since the gate doesn't server any purpose and you might think you have to find a switch to open it (since there is an actual switch to be found, which does nothing, that wouldn't even be unreasonable)
