TR2 is a REALLY bad game
Tomb Raider 1 was nearly perfect, how could they ♥♥♥♥ it up so bad? The very first level in TR2 is harder than ANYTHING in TR1. Way too many leaps of faith and instant death traps and moving walls without even one break. And it gets worse from there. Bullet sponge hitscan enemies galore. Bland and boring warehouse underwater levels. Mandatory damage hang drops. I thought the game would start to finally get good around the Tibet levels, but boy was I wrong. Janky ass snowmobile jumps that only SOMETIMES work. When they don't work, you either crash into a wall or fall to your death. And then there's a key that you pick up, when suddenly a guy in a snowmobile spawns RIGHT ON TOP OF ME and kills me instantly. I can't even see him coming because the camera is not even facing that way. If I avoid him, he shreds more than half of my health with his uzis. Why the ♥♥♥♥ does he get to use uzis on the snowmobile and I don't?? This is a hard blocker for me. I literally cannot beat this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ level. I don't even WANT to beat it, because I know the game is just going to dump more of this unfair ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

this is example of how devs strike gold once then simply don't know what to do with it at least imo

What. 2 is the best in the series!

You can blame Eidos for treating Core's staff like slaves to deliver the game on Christmas just to get their royalties. Eidos was a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ company to work with at the time.

Oh boy, don't tell him about TR3, he's not ready for it :D

tr2 definitely has some problems. way too many enemies with guns. but the puzzles are generally fair and intuitive unlike later games in the series (tr5 chronicles). but yeah idk i'd really not say it's a bad game. it's not the best but definitely not bad. i'd probably put it 4th, after 3/1/4.

Okay but you can save as much as you need to.

Tomb Raider IV has always been my favorite of the classics, with TR II as a close second.

The BS in the game was common in the 90s... you just adapted to it.

Tomb Raider 2's the "Great Wall" is one of the best levels ever. Badass difficult entrance to a pretty good tomb raider game. And this was even my first one as child and I had to learn the game in this hard level. Loving it. Especially the T-Rexes.

I say Tomb raider triology starting levels difficulty ranking is:

TR2
TR3
TR1

Jungle is not that hard.

TR 2 is the best one.

All the things you complain about (difficult jumps, death traps, enemies) only makes it more interesting and the "boring levels" you say are not boring, are just a different themed location, also you have a multitude of ways of doing many (if not most) of TR2 levels, that not counting on glitches that also exist the same on TR 1.

There is literally only 1 mandatory damage you can not avoid (the one at Maria Doria you can but is hard) and about enemies game expect you to know what will happen and plan ahead or have a hard time surviving even spamming heal, it is not "unfair", it just require more planning and care, you can do every single combat even without taking damage if you do it right (and depending on situation if you get some luck).

1st lvl shows what the game is about and have some of the higher difficulty traps section of the game, it is comparable to final levels and expansion lvls of TR 1, on purpose, TR 2 was clearly (clearly to me) made with TR 1 veterans in mind.

i finished TR2 3 times. TR3 is much more harder than TR2. you can savegame as much as you want, with this feature to finish TR2 is not hard.

The feedback the devs got from TR1 was to add more combat (though I don't know who was giving that feedback, remember this would have been effectively pre-internet), so they did, and then people complained and said there should be less. The devs hadn't really met with fans until I think the 20th Anniversary? And Eidos never gave them the bags of fan mail they were sent. It's kinda tragic really, who knows how different things could have been.

2 wasn't my favourite either. Started of well, but once in Venice, I can't say I enjoyed myself much. Oil rig wasn't any better. Damn shipwreck dragged on for too long and just rushed through it. Wondering when the game gets good again.
Then finally back in China, I had a better time. It was brutal but rewarding.

Still on 3 but so far 1 has been more fun to me.

Each game has something that distinguishes it from the other games, while at the same time maintaining the commonalities and essence. If they had made Tomb Raider 2 identical to Tomb Raider 1, the series would have failed. Everyone who played Tomb Raider 1 and finish it wanted to see something different in Tomb Raider 2, And everyone who played Tomb Raider 2 and finish it wanted to see something different in Tomb Raider 3.
And the first level in Tomb Raider 2 is not difficult for those who finished Tomb Raider 1. The last part of Tomb Raider 1 was difficult, So it makes sense that they would make the beginning of Tomb Raider 2 difficult, and the first level in tomb raider 2 is a very short level and it does not contain difficult or confusing puzzles, it's not that hard even for newcomers.
The shipwreck levels are the best levels in the series, and it is impossible for these levels to be boring because the ocean is scary and interesting place.
There are 52 levels in the three games, of which only 4 take place underwater. Is this a lot for you?!!
