The game also gives you flares whenever there's a dark area nearby, or within the dark area to replenish what you use

3 simple fixes you can try that resolve 99% of "It's too dark! I can't see anything" related issues:

1. Is your monitor or screen turned on? If not, on.
2. Are your eyes open? If not, open.
3. Do you have a bucket on your head? If so, off.

The devs probably have bad eyesight from looking at LED screens too much and don't understand that there are still people using older screens that are not that bright. The games are made for modern LED screens. I play this game on both my laptop and pc. But use an old screen with my pc and have the same brightness problem. But no problem at all with my laptop with the modern LED backlight screen. The devs should create an option to adjust brightness for those that prefer to use older computer screens.

I have to switch to the old graphics half the time because modern is so dang dark

I just realised this myself. I've loved this game since MSDos and Playstation days.
I'm missing half of the items treasures/levers etc because its too dark to see them. The only way to see them is to drop back to the original graphics mode, which defeats the point of having the new graphics, - Please devs include a brightness control - this is game breaking

- thats only true for TR2 and TR3

Interestingly Stella guides recommends saving flare for later levels when they are especially needed. But her guides were developed around PSX and PC versions which had very different mix of light and dark areas compared to remaster which changes a lot of places switching the light and darkness at times…

There's always the OG method for TR1, or if you want to save your flares in TR2 and TR3. Use pistols and fire at nothing a few times, the explosive discharge from the muzzles lights up the area briefly. Especially useful for dark alcoves and corners!

switch to classic mode <F1> to see more, it's also very handy to find the keys otherwise you don't see them properly. Switch back to Remastered mode with <F1> again.

I've only tried TR1 up to now, for about an hour, but it's totally unplayable for me in remastered mode, a complete waste. Yes there are areas that are ok to see, but you have to switch back and forth so much just to be able to see it's a nightmare.

The only way to play it without such hassle is entriely in classic mode... what a waste... fans asked for like 2 decades for these remasters... then this happens... absolutely useless and unplayable.

If the devs don't fix this with an update, then I really hope the community makes a mod because this is completely ruined for all fans.

I must admit that I also switch graphics mode often because it's either too dark or I'm not sure if there are items or not.

There are also places where some places is brighter in modern mode because of the light source.
But in most cases I switch to the original mode.

The concept of light sources is cool, but perhaps they should have added more.

Cheers!

I wonder if some people need to override their colour accuracy to reference mode in their graphics drivers or something, since there's really nothing wrong with these games on my system compared to other games. Then again if the game wasn't conforming to gamma settings it should affect both visual modes, not just remastered visuals.

Very strange though because I always thought I set my display to low brightness compared to the default, any display I've had is usually set in the 15-20 out of 100 range.

All that said though it's good accessibility to have brightness options in game, so they should really add them anyway.

Items I can agree with, because at least in TR1 (and I think TR2) items were full bright sprites so you could always see them whatever the conditions. TR3 I don't recall, maybe they were shaded somewhat. But the remastered graphics shade all items so if an item does happen to appear in a fully dark area it does obscure it compared to the originals.

It's true that TR1 (and probably the other ones too) is generally darker than in the original. But, hey, caves are supposed to be dark. And, when your monitor has a more or less accurate gamma, then you won't have any issues with the games.

I'd rather embrace it, than try to "fix" it. There's nothing broken anyway.
