You don't need a mouse, but the keyboard only controls work beautifully. I've always found them more accurate than a d-pad for classic Tomb Raider. You can rebind them if you prefer.

This game was released for DOS, when most folks didn't even have a mouse let alone a gamepad for their pc.
So you are going to be fine with a keyboard.

You can use mouse and keyboard, but mouse only works for modern controls by default.

Not really accurate though, considering this game came out in 1996.

Almost every PC owner had a mouse already. And MANY of us actually used the mouse to play games like Doom and Heretic.

i have completed this game several times only with keyboard. to me its feels better than modern controls. but know i play ps4 controller and feels more natural

Tank controls probably work just fine honestly on keyboard...

it's actually easier on keyboard. it's why if you're not using a keyboard in the speedrunning community you're in the very small minority.

M&k work just fine if using modern controls.
Otherwise as others stated, you can play it well with keyboard only with tank controls.

Yup, that too.

I didn't mention them, but point and click adventures were my favorite genre in the Nineties. Games like Gabriel Knight, Leisure Suit Larry 5 and 6, King's Quest and even Toonstruck were among my favorite games ever back then.
