TR3 may have more missable content but TR 2 1st level may throw a lot of people out of the game by the sequence of traps that have to be dealt with on the fly ... sure, that on PS1, on PC you can easily save after each trap you get through making it less hard by a lot.
TR 2 also have several of these moments where you are required more precision or to deal with a sudden different danger or enemy that is not so obvious or easy to understand at first glance and on the first few tries (like how to kill certain enemies without wasting a hell of health pack, the water section with the turbine blades creating suction, timed doors and lots of secrets that despite not being so easily missable can easily be misssed due to "how tf to get there?", also the jumping platforms and other unexpected stuff that may takke the player by surprise at least once or twice, maybe even a few times unttil the player understand how such new mechanic work.

TR 2 difficulty seem to start from where TR 1 expansion ended, TR 3 is more a "different take" while still holding to the same kind of stuff TR 2 did, but on expanded, bigger and more complex maps.

TR4 is like "lets make maps more convoluted and with new dangers or new ways to use things to create unexpected dangers and puzzles".

TR 5 is.... TR 4.5, like an expansion for it that sets the classics lore in stone (literally).

TR4 also has more ways to soft lock yourself.
Do you think TR1, 2 and 3 dont? Explore more the lvls :winter2019joyfultearsyul:

Absolutely, without guides (and I was around 14 to 16yo (more or less).

"Finding" the secrets or the way to it is a special thing, even more on a game that is all about the puzzling and exploration and imho a special thinh you spoiled yourself off of by using guides.

Kinda agree on the traps on the first level of 2, still that part, although hard, is a short burst of action that gives you that feeling of reward after surviving it and will make most people want to continue, I'd same the same applies to the whole game. Yes the 2nd game requires more observation and planning than the first one but it also amplifies that sense of accomplishment.
Completely agree on the secrets but same thing I said earlier applies to those.

I stand by my point on the first level of the games. TR I and II are mostly corridors with few collectibles and a couple areas that are bigger and of course traps that vary in difficulty, it's clear where you are supposed to go. But in III you have this completely open level with 0 directions and more than 30 collectibles, you have to figure everything out by yourself and it involves a lot more trial and error and wandering around.

I've also heard more people being stuck forever just in the first 2 levels of TR III making them quit as opposed to giving up on the floating islands of TR II, which means they almost beat the game.

I never actually finished the third game back then for the same reasons, it just got harder and more confusing.

I always felt like they made the 3rd one with the idea of "if you play this you already know what these games are all about and you are good playing them so here's a real challenge" and so they made it harder and more complex than the others. Compare the first level of each game and you can easily see it.

Yep, that's pretty much exactly how they made the game :)
It's a shame a lot of games these days don't really do that anymore.

From the start of the very first level you have a bunch of easily missable collectibles and secrets, different routes and deadlier environment, and it only gets harder and harder, especially if you're trying to 100% the game.

I'm 2 achievements off the 100% atm, Gotta finish TR3 on NG+ and under 6 hours.
Only a few levels to go, but there are some hard bits in there for sure.
Thankfully there are a lot of skips and glitches in TR3 to help with the 6 hour one but that save limitation in NG+ is a doozy.

it is easy once you know how to play it

games had to be difficult because they are short

"Part of the difficulty" (most of it actually) comes from exploring and solving puzzles, sometimes just finding where to ggo or what to do is the challenge, reason why I think the first run going blind (at any game) is far more rewarding and give any game way more value andd TR being all about exploration and puzzle I think a first time going with walkthrough is... well, "not recommended" (to say the least).

Nah, you have to really be trying (like trying to backflip off the balcony and into the tiny pool in 3) to softlock yourself in the original 3.

In 4, you can simply follow what appears logical to do and the game lets you do it no issue before you realize you're screwed.

Like back flipping into the "secret room" in the shaft down to Set, or just getting out of the jeep in level 3 or 4.

Well..

I meant more something like this:
TR 1 - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3177632024
TR 2 - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3247371221
(yes, second one is outside of Lara home.. I just "missed" the jump with too low health? (better.. I should had not jumped).

Also I did not take screenshot but I managed once to teleport Lara so far above the map the whole level was like some 100 pixels wide (I could not replicate to take screenshot or make video)

Well, that depends on several factors. The PC Version of TR3 in normal "Remake" mode I wouldn't consider the most difficult, because you can save all the time and no matter when you do Area51, they give you enough resources to get through the game.

On PC I would consider TR4 the most difficult, I got stuck all the time and a lot of the puzzles are not well communicated. Though the fights are not that hard, since you get a ton of ammo all throughout.

But if you do count original release and NG+, TR3 is ridiculously difficult and if you don't do Nevada first and don't find a lot of secrets, which is much harder than in TR2, it's almost impossible to complete.

The difficulty of TR2 varies greatly wether you collect (all) Secrets (on NG+ this is pretty much mandatory), but since collecting secrets isn't that hard in that game, I don't think this game is all that difficult.

TR1 is the easiest, even with Save Crystals. I guess I would rank difficulty liike this:

Easiest: TR1
TR2
TR5 (Patched)
TR3 (Remake)
TR4
TR1 NG+
TR2 NG+
Hardest: TR3 NG+

So it makes PS1/Saturn versions to be harder than the PC versions (and the memory card system when one did not had a memory card, forcing to play from the beginning of the game every time... I think I played a fair bit of 4 to 5 levels (FF VII I had left Midgar 2 or 3 times without memory card, RE 1 also had some fair bit of progress too without memory card and no, I had not played these games before with memory card neither followed gaming magazines at the time).

Before anything, PS1 at my country was imported but more often than not not by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stores and memory card was sold separately, I only had a memory card like 1 to 2 years after and games that required memory card I had to play like that, no "saves" meaning death or console shutting down = redo everything from start of the game.
