TR3 - Humans Cannot Drown in Quicksand
Just had my childhood destroyed when I read that, contrary to popular belief and to what happens in-game, “People and animals can get stuck in it, but they don’t get sucked down to the bottom—they float on the surface. Our legs are pretty dense, so they may sink, but the torso contains the lungs, and thus is buoyant enough to stay out of trouble.”

Can y’all relate to that misconception?

That sucks!

Well, at least we can be pretty sure everything else in the game is accurate. :P

From what I've seen in a documentary about quicksand a while back it can suck you in but just very very slowly and only if the mud/water balance and composition of the mud are just right.

Indiana Jones 4 lampshades the truth. And invented a fake technobabble term “drysand” to maintain Hollywood style quicksand….

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_quicksand

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iOcJJHOHHxk

Indy and Marion are trapped in drysand pit]:

Mutt:
What is it, quicksand?

Marion:
I'm calm.

Indy:
No, it's a drysand pit...

Marion:
I'm sinking, but I'm calm.

Indy:
...Quicksand is a mix of sand, mud and water and depending on the viscosity it's not as dangerous as people sometimes think.

Marion:
For Pete's sake, Jones, we're not in school!

Indy:
Don't worry. There's nothing to worry about unless there's a... [suddenly there is a void collapse] ...A void collapse.

Ok, Lara is alone there so she would starve to death stuck there forever.
Would you prefer to have Lara softlocked in quicksand until you reload the game?

It’s easier for humans to get out of real quicksand. Much harder for animals.

Myth busters had an episode on this. Humans can basically wade or float across the top/doggie paddle across the surface…

Cattle get stuck and can’t move at all.

I dont remember exactly but I watched this one, I thin guy there still needed help to get out because he was stuck.

I think depends on how deep and how solid the ground is underneath. My old geology professor escaped box canyons filled with quicksand just by slowly trudging through (it wasn’t particularly deep and had sandstone surface under it)… he mentioned it would have been worse situation had flash flood happened while he was in there.

with mythbusters was more the fact he was in a barrel/tub sitting he couldn’t flatten out to float on top. There wasn’t much room to move about.

The trick is to be slow not move too fast or you won’t move much at all. But move slow and deliberate you can inch your way…

What to Do When You're Stuck
If you do step into quicksand, says study co-author Daniel Bonn, you'll only sink in a little deeper than your waist. "I would say there would be some pressure on the chest, but not enough to cause serious trouble."
So how do you get out? Don't ask your friends to tug on you; they're likely to pull you "into two pieces if [they] try hard to pull [you] out," said Bonn, a physics professor at the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute at the University of Amsterdam.
"The way to do it is to wriggle your legs around. This creates a space between the legs and the quicksand through which water can flow down to dilate [loosen] the sand," he explained. "You can get out using this technique, if you do it slowly and progressively."

Impossible. There is no writing lower then not knowing which way is up.

A smart person wouldn’t experiment to see how far they can sink, and intentionally struggle, rather they’d start floating on their back or belly before they got too deep… lol….
I've always assumed that the "drowning in quicksand" stuff comes from medieval war. Knights would need to wear like 100lbs / 50kg of plate armor and if they found themselves in quicksand, the weight of their armor plus the sand could easily trap them. And if they end up face down... well, they're gonna drown and there's not much they could do about it.

Childhood destroyed? Okay guys, let's just all agree that nobody should tell him about the density of lava.
Leopsl Feb 29, 2024 @ 12:51pm
Interesting facts and insights shared y’all! I was jokingly dramatic with the reference to my childhood, nonetheless I was always curious to learn more about it as an adult. As for the lava density, I know there’s both solid and liquid versions featured in all classic TR games so with that I can sleep easy! :steammocking:
