it's definitely precaching as i have it disabled and there are no updates, the last build update was 24 days ago, on release

I have been too since launch of the game. 120kb here 86kb there and everyday I play.

Steam cloud is disabled globally and has been for a decade+.

I don't mean the major patches when it came out, and the major Restored Content mod (must have) because the game was a rushed mess, but for a while I was getting teeny tiny updates on it daily. Now that I think about it I haven't seen one in a while now.

What is that precashing and why it's only TR2 doing that of all the many games I have installed?

on windows i do not experience this at all

It's shader cache stuff. I disabled it in the Steam settings and it stopped for TR and a couple other games.
