TR3 shows everything that's poor about this remaster
I thoroughly enjoyed TR1, and even TR2 despite the inconsistencies with the lighting, But I was cautiously optimistic going into TR3 as imo it has some of the best looking levels out of the trilogy. Sadly it just doesn't compare to the OG, this is very apparent with the South Pacific levels. Fog/mist effects are missing, colours are lacking, textures don't look good or communicate that well to the player etc.

There is frankly too much clutter added in TR3 and not enough visual clarity. One of the designs that makes TR3 a more challenging game to play than the previous entries is that the route to progression is not the most obvious, it's more cryptic. You have to identify certain slopes or shapes, and there are lots of tricky jumps where you have to land on tight spaces. There has been many occasions where i had to switch to the original to actually see what i am looking at, even for the switches. I can't really say this is the definitive ver of this game when levels like Madubu Gorge and Thames Wharf look this bad.

TR3 was also first game to unify most of the special FX across all systems consoles and PC even on DirectX iirc. So proper transparencies and atmospheric fog, and reflections… which previously only PSX had and possibly 3DFX on actual hardware….

I actually feel like the remaster often helps you see things you wouldn't in the original game partly due to different lighting, maybe it's because I didn't play TR3 for a very long time but I struggled way less than usually.
I agree some areas feel worse though, prime example is the one in the first two levels of The Last Artifact that is very foggy and quite dark in the original, ruined the vibe with the remaster version

Agreed, after 1 and 2 looking so good (the remastered opera house was amazing, the chandelier on the ceiling, wow) 3 looked so bad. The jungle levels were a cluttered, chaotic mess, and some of the London levels, the textures looked genuinely unfinished. Maybe they ran out of time to polish it or something. Big shame.

If I didn't care I wouldn't of bought it. TR3 deserves better treatment
