does it make sense to collect scrap metal?

I guess not if you don't plan to trade it for items while currently being on the map

if youre on a long session, use a lot of equipment and frequent your base alot i suppose
when you have a workshop expansion you can deliver scrap and get spare parts, which you can turn into anchors and jacks at the workshop

Honestly I got pretty far by not needing to upgrade my base at all... or collect much of anything. the base building and collection feels more like a busy work chore then anything of value.

Scrap metal is absolutely useless. Especially on the first map, where you can't build a workshop in your base, the scrap metal literally does nothing. Yet another messed up / missed / unfinished mechanics in the game.
