Only way ist to go in low gear or high gear. Later in the game you will have access to offroad or fine tune gearbox. Driving with Low+ is also not too slow for some trucks. Other than that - driving in A means auto reverse after stopping.
What you want is already in game
No, you found a work-around. I still would like to have normal gears. That would be great, working with clutch,.. setting it on a hill starting in 1st gear, etc.
Again, the work around was already mentioned and better than nothing, but still hope we get gears one day. But the same aply for front, rear and mid diffs. There will, almost, always something to wish for.
It's certainly a reasonable ask and something I'd also like to see incorporated into the gameplay. That said, it's an open question whether the game engine can even support the granular transmission, gearbox and torque modeling that a lot of us have had on our wishlists for the series for the past decade.
