we really really want the backflip to be something that players pick up very gradually, with very steep difficulty curve! so just having it accessible by pressing a button is against its design
wombat've had to go through a ton of iterations of the way it's inputed, i think the one we decided upon achieves this very well! and while it does allow for unintentional flips, they're something you can 100% play around once you get a feel for it!!
in case you're controlling the character using the stick, the diagonals are a bit weird by default! this can make the first case you mentioned happen more often
you can go to Steam Input -> Edit Layout -> Joysticks -> Left Joystick Behavior (Cogwheel icon) -> set Overlap Region higher, personally i find it comfortable around 8200
(i'm considering making it the new default too, but i want more people to try it first - really don't want to mess up the speedrunners' muscle memory until i'm confident about it)
UPD: wombat mentioned that he wants to do another pass on the input! no idea what it'll look like though!
as i mentioned, wombat wants to try iterating on it some more - whatever he's cooking will become a part of the next update sometime in Feb! (though i personally think that they're cool as they are - but i may be biased, i've had a lot of time to practice them haha)
