Random Crash fix
So I think I found a fix for all the random crashes that occur throughout the game. It requires abit of fiddling with the properties so make sure you're admin on your computer before doing this.

Step 1. go to your Steam Deadly Premonitions folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut)

Step 2. Click once on DP.exe and then right click on properties

Step 3. Go to the compatibility tab and make DP.exe run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode

Step 4. Go to DPLauncher.exe and go to the compatibility tab as before

Step 5. THis time click the check box that makes the launcher be run as an Admin

Step 6. Run the launcher and play through the spot that was crashing saving once you are through.

Step 7. Undo the steps I just said and enjoy the game in all its cheesy glory

If crashing continues Rinse and Repeat.

Enjoy!

Will be checking this out shortly.
Meanwhile just a quick question: Why should I UNDO the steps once I get past the crash?

Glory to Arstotzka!

Well if you're like me you're stuck on this one area of the game that crashes at a regular set point (The diner in episode 2) and the game was stuck in windowed fullscreen so I just did the fix and saved and undid it to go back to standard fullscreen.

Yes, I tried your method and saw what you meant as soon as the game started in windowed mode.

Well it seems to have worked! I was stuck trying to get into the community center in ep1 ch6 (I think) and now it loaded perfectly fine. I also didn't have any crashes while driving (which I often do).

It kinda bothers me to switch back and forth between windowed and fullscreen so I guess I'll look into the DPfix which I read it makes it borderless windowed -among other things-.

This also seems to have fixed the long loading times, although I haven't been testing it for very long.

May your children be deported, Arstotzkan fascist! Kolechia will never bow to your demands.

Your assistance in this matter has been greatly appriciated. Now I may perhaps play an hour more before I crash! To the York mobile!

But seriously, THANK YOU! I really appreciate this. Crashed once more, but after that it seems to have worked perfectly for 02:01 thingie (first time at the museum).

EDIT: wow no... really... Rising Star Games REALLY don't want this to be playable. Crashing when I either talk to someone or get in a car now. It feels more like they have gone out of their way to make sure it's hard to play this game rather than making it fun to play.

EDIT2: You know something is wrong when you make a joke about "maybe I'll be able to play for another hour" and you can't even play for more than five minutes...

Well, this didn't fix the crashes for me in ep1 ch6.

Doesn't work for me. The game just locks up when driving for me. Usually in the same spot.

Worst port ever?

The car driving crash is simpler to fix, quit steam and restart the computer until it works.

I suppose I'm just waiting for the software fixes.

So all this is completely random?? :(

EDIT: Tried DPfix 0.5 to get borderless windowed and not have to switch compatibilities all the time. If I apply Win98 compatibility to EITHER DP.exe or DPlauncher.exe the game won't start. It just stays on black screen (borderless window) with no error message and the steam note that says I can switch to overlay.

I uninstalled DPfix and went back to compatibility. It crashed twice while interviewing townsfolk at the community center.

I'm stuck pretty early on after the Autopsy Report. I beat the 3 armed guards, a cutscene triggers and crash on the loading screen. This fix didn't help.

Try this: go to the game folder and double click DP.exe. It will run windowed, but try getting past the crash. If you do you can save and resume normal fullscreen play.

Thanks Blade Runner! I was stuck at episode 7 loading, with no hope to see the epilogue and your tip worked for me :)

You guys can also set the "large address aware flag" on the game executable. (with x64 bit OSs). The game sure has memory leaks and this tends to postpone crashes for longer periods of time.
