[Spoilers] Who exactly was Zach?

I have beaten the game a while ago and I forgot who Zach is exactly, so I know what happens in the story but I just don't remember that tidbit. I just bought Deadly Premonition 2 and I just wanted a refresher on who that "person" was even though DP2 is a prequel.

Zack is York's true personality, locked away after Forrest killed his parents and attacked him. As some kinda psychological coping mechanism and possibly magic his real personality was locked inside while the new one, York, was like "Don't worry bout things, I'm your new friend forever and ever! <3". and took charge of things.
