Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut

Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut

GUIDE: How to make Deadly Premonition run in HD @ 60fps (and fix other issues)
UPDATE JANUARY 2018: Added controller fixes & fixes fr latest Windows update.

Major update to this guide coming soon...

INTRODUCTION :

Since the recent release of the new season of Twin Peaks, I expect there will be an increase in people interested in playing the magical wonder that is Deadly Premonition (which was heavily inspired by Twin Peaks).

Like Twin Peaks, Deadly Premonition is a wonderful, bizarre and unique experience. Unfortunately, it is one that is mostly hindered by the unfortunate fact that every single version of this game has serious problems in one form or another.

The original 360 version has the horrible over the shoulder camera and wonky controls and the PS3 version has a horrifically bad framerate. While the PC version suffers from a locked 720p resolution and no graphics options!

However, thanks to modder Durante and some other dedicated fans; once you know how to make it work, it is by far the best version. There are a few excellent guides that help with this, but many are out of date and some are incomplete.

So I have put together this guide to help everyone new and old get this game up and running at its absolute best. Be warned though, even at its best the game is pretty clunky. But we can at least get you running Deadly Premonition the best it can be.

Thanks first to LentFilms for his very useful "Essential MODs" thread, and AngularGraphics original NeoGaf thread. And most importantly Durante's DSFix, without which none of this would be possible and there would never exist a half decent version of Deadly Premonition to play!

Ok so read and follow these steps carefully and be patient. If you have any issues please post and I will try and help.

INSTALLATION :

Once you have Deadly Premonition installed via Steam or GOG you will need DPfix to fix the 720 and 30fps lock (also makes the game less prone to crash)-

http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/DPfix095.zip

This pack includes:

1) Durante's DPfix 0.9.5, this fixes the locked 720p resolution issue.
2) InfiniteNine's HD font/HUD/icon pack.
3) Shlomo's improved textures for the in-game menu.

To install, simply extract the contents of this zip into the Deadly Premonition install directory.

Steam usually = C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut
GOG usually = C:\Games\Deadly Premonition\

Next, you need to edit the dpfix.ini file that you just copied into your install location.

Read the instructions in the ini file carefully to understand what settings are what and what your PC is likely to handle. If you simply want 1080p at 60fps with a decent graphics card (anything over a 960 should be good. Let me know if anyone has issues with a card and these settings), then I recommend these settings. Lower them for lesser cards (Note: DO NOT just copy and paste these settings, they are not formatted correctly, manually enter them) -

Then save the dpfix.ini!

If you wish to play with a DualShock 4 (or PS2/3 controller) then you will want Parsnip's button replacement pack. Download this -

http://beerlake.net/dp-stuff/47549036.dds
Mirror -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/dfzv20q72bzsehl/47549036.dds?dl=1

Then copy to the "tex_override" folder in the "dpfix" folder of your install location.

----

Next (and this part is missing from most guides but recommended by Durante) you will need RivaTuner Statistics Server in order to maintain 60fps. Without this, the game seems to lock at 45 or under for unknown reasons. Grab that here -

http://www.guru3d.com/files-get/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download,13.html

Install and run. Then add DP.exe to the applications, set "Application detection level" to high and the "Framerate limiter" to 60fps. You will need to run this before launching the game every time so it is running in the background.

Now launch the game and from the launcher go to the options and disable FULLSCREEN (as we are using DPfix to force borderless windowed, which is needed for triple buffering and a solid framerate). You should now be able to launch the game and it SHOULD work and in HD with a solid framerate!

----

CRASHING ISSUES WITH NEWER OPERATING SYSTEMS

The game has a tendency to crash as soon as you start the game or load a save in Windows 10 (especially after the creator's updates).

There are two known fixes for this:

1. Make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers (do a clean install if needed) and then try launching from DP.exe.

2. If that does not work then try uninstalling LAV Filters -

http://www.uninstallhelps.com/how-to-uninstall-lav-filters-0-44.html

3. If this still does not work, then try setting the DP.exe compatibility to Windows 98. Failing that please post here and let me know and I will see what I can do to help.

CONTROLLER ISSUES

DP has another issue that can effect many people in which the right stick has its axis swapped for unknown reasons. If you get this issue then follow these solutions.

DUALSHOCK 4

If you are using STEAM and a DS4 there is an easy fix, but you will have to use InputMapper instead of Steams built-in DS4 support. Make sure you run InputMapper and sync the DS4 BEFORE running Steam. This only works if InputMapper is able to connect in Exclusive mode. If you can not do that and can't find a fix try the 360 fix) -

https://inputmapper.com/

360/XBOX ONE (OR GENERIC CONTROLLERS)

For 360/Xbox One controllers I have a better solution coming soon.

But for now here is a fully usable solution. First, enable controller mapping in Steam. Goto SETTINGS > CONTROLLER > GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS. Then enable the 360 controller mapping (or generic for other controllers). Then go back to your Library, right click and select EDIT STEAM CONTROLLER CONFIGURATION. Then BROWSE CONFIGS then COMMUNITY. You can even goto OTHER CONTROLLER TYPES for more options. Most will work. There are several to choose from that fix the issue in different ways.

The most reliable is a remapping of K/M, if you use that be sure to choose Keyboard as your controller type in DP's settings. The downside is that you will not get controller button prompts. However, I will be uploading a texture replacement to use along with my own K/M mapping soon that will fix this issue.

BONUS: Install these SweetFX files for improved colour saturation -

Also check out "-3xA'Lu©κy's" great guide for a bunch of fixes, patches and an exe that allows you to skip the intros! See the first link in the troubleshooting section.

-----------

TROUBLESHOOTING:

If you are still having issues running the game or experiencing crashes, first try a reboot. For some people, the game only works when it is the first thing ran after a reboot (other than RTSS, InputMapper and Steam/GOG).

If that does not work try launching from DP.exe directly.

Or setting compatability mode to Windows 98 (also useful for some chapters that are crash happy and then turning back off when you get to the next save point as it sometimes makes videos jittery).

Failing these try the fixes listed at the following links -

Outside of those, please feel free to post here and I will try my best to help.

And lastly, take a look at the Deadly Premonition fan site Welcome to Greenvale for guides, help, secrets and more -

And my one tip I would give all new players is to complete the "nameless flower" sidequest as soon as possible. It will give you a radio that you can use to fast travel to any location you have been to or peeked into. Saves you from the driving sections that wear out their welcome quickly.

Sorry for rezzing a dead post, but I'm having a bizarre issue. I went through the generic controller fixes you said, and I got the game to recognize my controller and use it on the main menu and for cutscenes! Whoopee! Success, right? W r o n g ! I ended up getting to the tutorial, and I can't do anything, with my controller OR my keyboard! If this helps, I also noticed that my mouse does not click into the program anymore after that point. Any help?

Anyone know where I can download the HD Re-texture Pack from here: https://www.gog.com/forum/deadly_premonition_directors_cut/essentail_mods/post20

Yes, I have that and a few other textures packs. I intend to put together a collection along with a website to encourage other players to contribute texture upgrades. Hopefully we can crowd source a whole HD remaster :)
Could you please upload it to dropbox or mediafire, or somewhere other than that malware infested zippyshare that the original link is uploaded to? Every time I hit the download button, I just get taken to another site that keeps telling me I've been hacked. Thanks in advance.
Thanks very much. Game looks so much better. It's a bit dark for me than before though, any settings I can change to make it lighter?
Choppy FPS on a GTX 970
Edit: And a reboot fixed all issues. WTF how badly was this ♥♥♥♥ coded

The game keeps crashing on the map screen when I try to bring up the missions.
That's a new one. Even after a reboot?
Happy to help!
Thank you so much! This helped me fix some technical issues I was having :) ( I accidently deleted my previous comment)

I give up! I'm officially just giving up on getting the ""PC-port"" of Deadly Premonition to run at a playable frame rate with a DS4/DualSense-controller in this lifetime!
I've tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING to make it work! Everything in this guide, everything in Lucky's guide, everything anyone ever suggested in any forum on the internet since 2013, tried to run it in compatibility mode (98/ME, XP SP3, Windows 7/8, "Run as Administrator"), tried the GOG-version, tried all combinations of forceWindowed, borderlessFullscreen AND in-game Fullscreen mode, always tried both the Launcher and DP.exe with every major change of "variables", tried to run RTSS in the background, tried not to run RTSS in the background, started the game multiple times right after a clean restart, tried to uninstall, reinstall and repair PhysX, tried different settings in Nvidia control panel, tried to set the virtual 360-controller as the default game controller, tried exclusive mode in DS4Windows-settings, tried different versions of DS4Windows and similar programs like reWASD, tried different versions of DPfix, tried different versions of SweetFX, tried different resolutions and other graphics settings aaaaaaaaand THE GAME IS ALWAYS A F*CKING SLIDESHOW THAT PERSISTENTLY REFUSES TO PROPERLY RECOGNIZE THE STICKS AND D-PAD INPUTS OF MY PS-CONTROLLERS!
And the frustrating irony of it all: I've already played the whole game a couple of years ago with almost the same setup - at 60FPS, 1080p without any problems whatsoever! (apart from an unavoidable crash in a later chapter where I needed a savefile but I guess that's "normal")

Anyway, I wasted WAY too much time on this BS already, so I thought maybe I should get this game for PS3 instead and then pray that I don't have to actually play it on a PS3 but somehow get it to run on an emulator. And you know what? IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM INSTANTLY! 60FPS, 4K, 16xAF, no visual glitches, controller recognized, no input lags, no savegame problems, no crashes! (with a stock 6700K!).
At least that's the case with older versions of rpcs3, like 0.0.12-10844 - later versions seem to cause annoying shadow flickering.

So, we've come to a point in time, where it's easier and more straightforward just to emulate the PS3-release of DP on a PC than to perform all of these strange occult rituals to get the native PC-version to work... if you're lucky!
I'm happy for the majority of people who managed to overcome all the problems that I had, but for everyone else I can only recommend buying this game used for PS3 on eBay (at least if you own a PS3 or a Blu-Ray drive; maybe the 360-version with Xenia also works, but I don't know about that - from my understanding Xenia is still rather experimental), dump the game files, set up rpcs3 correctly (which is really not that complicated, compared to the rocket science that you'd have to do in this guide alone) and then just enjoy playing this great game from start to finish, which should be step 1 of 1 anyway!
Yep, I'm afraid I knew this would eventually be the case. It's actually great that we can emulate the PS3 version as running that version on a PC is easily the most stable version. And probably easier to set up.

If you have a half decent PC, find an ISO dump and play it there, after buying a legit version of course!
Whyyy sometimes the game looks too dark?
the game looks very dark on the title screen, and in the main menu. the brightness on the cars is oversaturated, they seem to be overexposed or overexposed. but otherwise it seems to be normal. is there any way to fix this? I configured DPfix.ini according to your instructions. what parameter in the ini file is responsible for this?

I play on the DualSense-controller from PS5. I use the DSX program bought on Steam, select Xbox 360 emulation. When you launch the game, open the Steam overlay. Go to the gamepad settings, activate Steam input and download the most liked user profile for the gamepad. Activate it and enjoy the game. You can also download 47549036.dds so that the buttons on the screen are from the PlayStation and not from the Xbox.
Guys i`am getting a black screen when i move camera, it dissapears only under a certain angle of view. what should i do?
Didn't know this game was a minutes per frame mess until I booted it up for some steam cards. Downloaded the stuff, it works fine now. Thanks! :D
