there's also a chance ppl at pony express wanted to recover the tulpar since (at least, i imagine) that its company property so perhaps in that scenario he could be rescued
Admittedly that's an incredibly dark ending so I'm also amenable to the mouthwash company hiring like a crew to track down their missing merchandise and this crew manages to find Curly in time. Course it's left open ended enough that nothing can be certain.
