I agree that it is telling that Curly ends up helpless and passive. He's rendered just as passive post crash as he acts pre-crash. However, I still think it was a tough situation for him and he barely had a day to wrap his head around it before the crash. Sadly Curly didn't have enough TIME to act, even if he wanted to even if he could have figured out a fair answer for everyone. He had hours, hours that he didn't know were ticking down.
I feel bad for the guy...
curly introduced a dangerous man to an otherwise respectful work atmosphere, hoping the best of his longtime friend, thinking he could trust him, and it all went down hill. i cannot imagine the insane amount of guilt that must plague this man. i might have to write an essay on this game, not gonna lie. its infecting my brain.
before he knew what jimmy actually did, he was fairly comfortable with just letting him be rude and unreasonable with anya, it was definitely a "that's just jimmy" type thing in his head that he was willing to ignore. he ignored it so thoroughly that when anya finally started showing serious signs of something being wrong, he didn't even consider that jimmy's constant ridicule and torment could be responsible for how she's feeling, he just assumed she was having an episode due to the stress of her position.
curly's had a long enough time to learn better that he can't be called oblivious, he's complacent. he's unwilling to act and is ultimately punished for that by being rendered unable to act while jimmy destroys everything around him. having all of his agency stripped from him is a very fitting punishment, because he'd spent all of his time leading up to the events of the game deliberately pretending he didn't have any.
You say that while bringing nothing to the table. Maybe you didn't understand it?
It goes to show that excessive kindness is NOT a virtue and can actually be more damaging in the long run.
J: "[...] or this can all be remembered as a tragedy. Despite what must have been the best efforts of its acclaimed captain. The Tulpar crew was never found. No one survived to tell the tale. You're standing at the top. Feet in cement. I get it now. Right?"
C: "... ...right."
J: "I'll take care of it."
And just... let him walk away. It's one thing to give your buddy the benefit of the doubt, it's rather another to do nothing when he tells you, to your face, "sure would be convenient for both of us if everyone on this ship died, huh?"
partly because of his relationship with jimmy and well not having the spine to take action and trying to keep everything chugging along, hoping someone else would fix it once they arrived at the destination.
