Question on setup
So I have two questions.
#1 How difficult is it to set up a game and play online? I haven’t for the life of me figured out the server aspect of any online game... opening ports.. and what not.
#2 Would it be difficult at all to setup a LAN game.. i.e. would I have to run through the opening of ports.. Which alludes me.

I would appreciate any help. My friends and I want to play this game. I just want to know for sure we can setup a game.

#1: You need to know how to access and change your router configuration.
#2: That should be no problem.

What LoB said. For #1, if you never understood opening ports, there IS a guide for it in the guides section here on steam, but you'd still need to know what your router is and the login info for it.

For the LAN games, its as simple as having everyone on the same network (home wifi, ethernet, so on) and having everyone connect up to the ip that the game lists when you launch the server for it.

will hamachi work for this? that should solve the problem of port forwading and generally be more secure etc.

I would recomend using Evolve instead of Hamachi. Hamachi is more widely known, yes, but every time I use it it screws up my networking for my computer big time, even after uninstalling it. I have had no issues with Evolve.

thanks, i will try evolve, hamchi works fine for minecraft and starbound so I presumed it would work for this.

This is my first time setting up ANY kind of LAN game. So if I understand correctly.
I can have all the players connect to my switch, which is connected to my router. Then all the other players will need is the "server" IP address. Is that correct? Do I need to setup prt forwarding?
Carbsta Jul 7, 2014 @ 11:11am
not if you can use hamachii or evolve, it networks the pcs so no need for portforwading

I aplogize if I am asking silly questions. I am new to setting this up.
So I set up Hamachi on my server phyiscally connect all computers to switch connect them to the server IP?
Oh and what is the Artemis 6 pack anyway?

I can't answer about Hamachi, but the 6 pack is just 6 copies of the game. One for yourself, and five to give away to friends, so that you can play with a full crew. Otherwise, each other person will have to get their own copy of the game if they don't already own it.

hamchii is a program you can download. You create a username and create a group that your friends can join. Your friends join this group and this creates a "direct connection" between all the PCs in the group. There are no wires or anything, it is all online. It is designed so you can "connect" two PCs on different networks, with out potentaily putting your security at risk.
So I can play minecraft or artemis with my friend who live across the globe easily.
If all the PCs you want to "connect" (again not connect literally, there are no wires) are in the same room/ building/ connected to the same network then you DON'T have to worry about port forwading OR hamachi.
I just use hamachii to prevent unwanted access to my PC, which can happen if your not careful when port forwading.

@totallycarbon, thanks for the info.
I am setting up a switch and connecting to a router. Our plan is for a LAN party. We are brining all the equipment and people in one place and playing Artemis all day and night.
Carbsta Jul 8, 2014 @ 1:01pm
kk, if all the equipent is in one place, don't worry about hamachii at all, if your on the same network all you need is the hosting computers IP, like I mentioned above. it should be pretty simple but I have never done a game of artemis on a local network in the same room as other people to find out.
Have fun

In a LAN, you don't need to do anything special other than run Artemis, and have all the computers connect to the address listed on the Artemis server screen after you start the server.

I have a question on steam and setting up.
I bought the 6 pack of Artemis. After connecting all of the client computers to the LAN network. How do I get the other copies to the other client machines?
I currently have a 8 port switch connected to our router.
Carbsta Jul 11, 2014 @ 12:01pm
if you got the six pack on steam, you have to send to copies to other steam accounts, so you can send them to your friends steam accounts as gifts, then if each friend logs onto their steam on those client computers you will all be able to play.
