Co-op connection issues
Alright, so I've looked through threads, reddit posts, and googled online to find out how to fix the connection issues. Myself and a friend both have 2010 TCP open on both ends. I've used whatsmyip.org to find my ip and given it to him. I can connect to my server game instance via 127.0.0.1, but he can't connect to the server using my IP. I even had him ping my IP to see if there was packet loss (there wasn't) or if he could even see me at all (he could).

Myself and several other friends all have this game and would like to play together, but it's not very user friendly. Any help would be appreciated.

Kill your firewall totally and test again. If it works, that's where it comes from.

What was the IP your friends are trying to connect to? was it this 127.0.0.1? (no need to post the actual IP).

I'm guessing (and i don;t like doing that) that you have a router setup in your home, this is where you connect "out" to the internet. this will need to have port fowarding setup as i suspect what is happening is that your friend is getting to your router (via the IP you gave him) but the router just sees the incoming connection and refuses it (as it should). If you can give a bit more info i can try and help you more :)

lets get you back i the fight Captain o7

I used whatsmyip.org to find my IP, gave it to my friend, and had port forwarding set up on my end, and he had it set up on his end. We haven't tried turning off the firewalls yet.

Well I was gifted a copy through steam from the people I'm trying to play with and Steam auto-updates so I don't think that's it.
Ahh ok are they on steam as well? including the host machine.

Also whats the IP of the server? you said 127.0.0.1 this is not something you should see. i would expect it to be something like 192.168.0.xx

have you managed to play online at all?

also try turning UPnP on in your router config.

127.0.0.1 is just home IP for your machine. I do see the 192.168.X.X, but I can log on via home IP for my own instance, so there's no need to use the LAN IP.

I haven't even tried playing online with anyone else because I have no idea what I'm doing or looking at which is why I've been trying to get it working for myself and friends so we can stumble through it together. I've spent a total of 71 minutes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around with this thing trying to get it to work.

I haven't messed with UPnP yet because I don't know anything about it.
Ok first of don'r use localhost (127.0.0.1) use your network IP it's bad practice to use it. do you have access to a second machine/device in your house? try connecting one if you do.

I am 90% sure this is a networking issue that is outside of the game. Not sure what time zone you are in but i'm willing to host game for you to try connect to etc. Im in the UK.

You have to remember that this game was not intended for either steam or being played over the internet. It was created to be played on a local LAN and on top of that it's made by one guy who also has a full time job. It's only on steam because lots of people kept asking for it. If your getting wound up after spending just over an hour trying to get this to work it might not be the game for you.

Why would I need to use my network IP when my home IP lets me connect just fine? It literally has no effect on anything other than my client connecting to my server on my own pc.

I'm absolutely positive it's a networking issue, but likely due to poor coding. I have looked at several posts detailing how to have players connect to you and it's all the same thing. Give them your ip that you find at whatsmyip.org, open 2010 port, and they should be able to connect. I've gone a step further and turned off firewalls and still can't get anyone to connect.
why would you need to? because it's bad practice thats why. It's not your "home" IP btw the ip range 127.0.0.x will always be classed as localhost. You don't even need a network adaptor installed for it to work. so if you do have a problem with firewalls/network issues you will never know because your not using them.

I'm getting the idea that you neither know what your talking about and you don't want help. simple answer get a refund.

It's not "poor coding" at all i have run games with people coming in via VPN's, over a standard internet connection and also running machines on my internal network these are PC's, MACS and Android...no network issues.

i offered to help you but it seems you just want to whine

TLDR:get a refund

UPnP is a protocol for automatically opening ports. If you've already opened ports there's no need to use it (also I doubt the game supports it).

Also "using 127.0.0.1 when connecting to localhost" is not bad practice, don't listen to this guy.

Have you tried letting your friend host instead?

Try checking to see if your router is "Stealthed". If it is...you need to disable the "Stealth" option. Oh and if you have AT&T as your service...don't bother. They won't allow unstealthing even if you actually click it off in the router config. Google Shields Up! to see how that works and to see if your stealthed or not.

UPDATE: AT&T does allow unstealthing. The server just has to be started up to see it on ShieldsUp! I just hosted a 3 hour session of Artemis myself. Good times.
