Mac/Linux version Open(ish) Beta Test!
If you already own the game, you should now be able to download and play a Beta test of the Mac and/or Linux version of it from your Steam Library!

I'm sorry this has taken so long, but please understand that we are a small 2-man studio and I'm the only programmer, and we're using an in-house C++ engine (dubbed "CrazyEngine") so no magic button to export to other platforms like you'd get from Unity or the like. I've spent a lot of time over the last year working on this porting project, including creating an OpenGL renderer and SDL2-based sound, controller, and OS-interface modules.

Despite that I'm still only vaguely familiar with OSX and Linux environments (I did most of the work in Windows since it also supports OpenGL and SDL2). To be honest, I'd never used Linux before about a month ago (though now that I have I can see its appeal) and although I was primarily used Macs back "before they were cool" in the OS 7/8 era, I eventually gave in to pressure from work and games and switched to Windows around the time OS 9 came out, so OSX is still a strange new beast to me.

My point is, all I can guarantee for now is that it Works On My Machine and cross my fingers that it works for all of you as well! Be gentle!

System Requirements

OSX

OS 10.6 or higher
Intel-based architecture w/ 32 bit app support
OpenGL 1.3 compatible video card/drivers
?????

Linux
32-bit C/C++ runtime libraries
SDL2 runtime libraries
(the above should already be included if you have native Steam Runtime support!)
OpenGL 1.3 compatible video card/drivers
?????

Beyond that I don't know for sure, especially on the Linux side with all its many variations. I built the game with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS so it obviously works on that.

I assume the hardware requirements will be the same as for Windows... but you all tell me, do games generally require more or less powerful hardware on OSX and Linux compared to Windows versions? If you have a low-end machine and the game runs poorly on it, let me know so I can reflect that in the Minimum System Requirements on the store page for the official release.

Anyway post any comments or issues you have in this thread for now. Thanks and have fun testing out the game!

Seems to be a great port so far, thanks! 360 controller works perfectly.

Runs smoothly on my laptop:

Core i3 2350m
Intel HD 3000
4 GB RAM
Kubuntu 14.10

I have a much lower specced netbook I'll test, too.

edit: runs great on the netbook, too

Intel Atom N270 @1.6GHz
Intel 945GME
1 GB RAM
Lubuntu 14.04 LTS

These responses are doing wonders for my stress level right now... ;).

I've had no issues (besides me being clumsy with the keyboard controls) on Debian Testing.

For those fellow GNU/Linux users, run the following command in a shell to show off what hardware / driver combinations work (or don't).

uname -a && lscpu | grep -e Architecture: -e ^CPU\(s\): -e Vendor && sudo lspci -k | grep VGA -A 3 && lspci | grep Audio && cat /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal

My Output:

Thank you very much for your efforts to support Linux/OS X gaming!

I've only had two issues yet, and neither are game braking. Very playable on linux!

The first is that far view has a low framerate on linux, which was not a problem on the same computer with windows rather than Ubuntu. (I have only tried this on Ubuntu 14.10, and not on Ubuntu 14.04)

The other is whenever I lose the "Mjollnir's Blessing" my character turns blue until i take another hit.

My computers hardware:

PC model: Asus S200E
OS: Ubuntu 14.10

I also ran the command Marx suggested and this is the output: Hope it helps ;)

Linux C7-VR-Laptop 3.16.0-23-generic #31-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 21 17:56:17 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And thank you for including Linux support! :D :VolgarrWalrus:

EDIT: The lagg with far view is only a problem when the game runs in windowed mode and far less noticeable when playing fullscreen mode.

Sounds like it could be compiz. I'd try playing on a different WM/DE.

Im not quite certain i understood what you meant. But I tried changing from Bilinear X2 to point and then to Bilinear. Using point completely chrashed Ubuntu for me once. But changing to Bilinear seems to have solved the problem for me. And just because I am qurious... Is that what you meant?

Working perfectly on my opensuse 13.1 64bits machine with a Nvidia 430 card.
Taron  [developer] Oct 24, 2014 @ 6:27pm
Okay I just uploaded a quick patch with the following changes:

  • Fixed Volgarr becoming blue-tinted after using Mjolnir's power.
  • Fixed Graphics menu displaying incorrect possible resolution choices for full screen mode.
  • Added Full Screen Window option in the Graphics menu (also known as SDL_WINDOW_FULLSCREEN_DESKTOP mode to those in the know).

Ya'll have a good weekend!

Thank you so much!

Hey, Linux guys. I quoted some of you for an article about the beta on GamingOnLinux.com*. Please let me know if you're uncomfortable with that and I'll get an editor to remove your quote.

Thanks for putting so much work into a Linux port, Taron! :D I'll definitely buy a copy within the next few days when I have some more time to spare.

The game seems to also work perfectly for me on Mac OS X (10.9, intel i7 and intel hd 4000)

Thanks so much for getting this up and running :)
