Crew Recruiting

I have come across many missions that let me beam down. Most of these missions also let me bring my crew down with me. Theres only one problem - I dont HAVE a crew. I thought that adding an ally ship to your fleet would count as a crew member, but when I begin the mission, my crew slots are empty. I tried looking for things under diplomacy for my ally, but nothing says anything about adding members to your crew. Could anyone help me?

You have to add them in the Captain's log screen I think. If you don't have an allied fleet, you can do it with members of your empire.

sorry to ask, but how do I get to my captain's log? is it under settings or something like that?

It is over the little image of your spaceship. It has a star logo on it.
