They made a huge mess with destroying Origin and then launching crappy EA App. And the Steam version of Spore is kinda meh. Makes GOG version the only one reliable to play.
It was widely considered that Origin version was the most stable. Although I didn't notice any serious differences.
The thing about GOG one is that you buy the game and Galactic Adventures + Creepy & Cute in one pack, and it's all included in the installation file. That means that you don't need to suffer with installing the game then both of it's DLCs separately in the right order. And they're all installed into one directory. Although this could be a difficulty for those installing mods, since there's no separate GA folder. But it still seems to work for me (I have Dark Injection installed + some necessary mods like Forcesaver).
I sometimes had a problem that the Spore on Origin didn't recognise the C&C pack (this was only one or two times, although), so I just prefer to play GOG version. Also, both versions sometimes seem to disconnect from Spore servers, however, it wasn't a hug problem to reconnect.
Also the problem with game keys. EA had decided long time ago to remove the base Spore game keys, so you cannot reddem them on Origin and thus you cannot access Sporepedia. You have to talk the support to give you the key. Strangely enough, this is not the case with GA and C&C.
What about modifications, I haven't tried them on Steam version, but people tell that mods often don't work correctly there, and that the best version for modified Spore was the Origin one. But EA once again ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ their pants with killing already good working game launcher and replacing it with EA App. You can watch DarkEdgeTV's video to know more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyFlXNPt-Xc
Thus, I would rather recommend to buy a GOG version.
