To downgrade Steam Spore to March2017, do the following:
Press Win + R, and type in steam://open/console/ to open Steam's console.
From there, type download_depot 24720 24721 7407510787032991484 into the console to prompt Steam to download the old version.
When it's installed, it will not be in the default location but instead in Steam/Steamapps/Content/, and you can safely copy over the EXE file"

thankyou very much. while surely easy for those who know what they are doing its a lot harder for those of us that are unfamiliar with these sorts of things.

Idk man, that's pretty self-explanatory

when you type the command into the steam console it doesn't actually "know" where the game is on your PC so it downloads it to a dedicated folder. you need to take the SporeApp.exe from that storage location (Steam/steamapps/content/app_24720/depo24721/SporebinEP1) and move it to "steam/steamapps/common/Spore/SporebinEP1", replacing the one already there

I did this and now it just says it's unable to connect to servers, can't even attempt to login. Does this actually work for some people? Is there something I'm missing?

as far as i understand you won't be able to login, no. this is for mod users who don't mind offline (been stuck in offline for years myself) and wanted to use their mods still, the ones broken by the update at least.
