Welp, the vaporware scam aimed at stealing code that gets floated around as a Spore successor is still around and last I checked cell stage was supposedly kindof playable.
However, EA has thier lawyers with their C&D orders so an indie version of Spore would have to be different enough to dodge that, which would most likely change the game enough that it would lose the simplistic charm that Spore has, even before we look at how big the niche market may or may not be.
I mean it looks good, like an amped up version of the cell stage but it's just the cell stage. No sharing of actual creatures, buildings, levels, etc which is what really made Spore so unique.
If there was ever a spiritual successor I would want it to include a full range of evolution along with the ability of sharing those creations online.
