Within the void, Spode attempted to make himself mortal with his staff. He almost succeeded, but accidentally split himself in two; one half became his more powerful and dangerous side, while the other was the exact opposite, despite having control over the Rod of Ayla. The more powerful side, who would take up the name Zarkhator, was jealous and frustrated by the way life had evolved so... erratically. He sought to reshape it all in his own image, but Spode's other half took action, sealing the villain away in the Rod of Ayla with what power he had. Terribly weakened, he headed for a nearby planet rich with life, and he mingled with the dominant race residing there. Taking up the name "Steve", he fought with Zarkhator internally for years up until he joined the Spice Trade, where he began to trade with races such as the Grox, who would be his last. The Grox distrusted Steve when he told them he was their lost creator, and they captured him. When Steve eventually escaped, the Grox resorted to destroying his escape pod, and the Rod of Ayla with him. But they were unaware of the consequences of this...
As the Rod of Ayla exploded, Zarkhator's spirit was released and Steve was reduced to the same state. The two of them rode their respective essences, Red and Blue meteors, across the stars up until they impacted a life-rich planet in a far-off system. Steve awoke from an egg made from his essence with no memory of how he arrived, up until a local named Meejee led him to his tribe's Sage, who told him of a prophecy that told of a guardian that will fall from the sky. Through several trials and meetings with other races, Steve learned that HE was the prophesized guardian, and with a new body part fusing his essence with pieces of the Rod of Ayla, he finally remembered why and how he came here. He faced Zarkhator once more, reducing him to a painfully weak body. After the embarrasment was over, Steve set to work making a new staff with what he had. Fusing his essence with the Rod fragments and a tiny bit of the planet's life blood, he created the Staff of Life. With that done, he rounded up the pitiful Zarkhator and prepared a colorless meteor, seeding it with his new staff. With that, he said his final goodbyes to Meejee and his friends, and launched himself into space with the rock. But Zarkhator, who had been squished in with Steve, had other plans...
Zarkhator used what power he had to separate himself and Steve from the meteor, sending it off into the unknown. After that, Zarkhator himself flew straight for the Grox, embedding himself in their central computer. Bent on revenge, he seeded within the Grox a hatred for all that lives and changed one letter in their prime directive; "Explore" became "Explode". That jumpstarted the Grox into rapid expansion and galactic annihilation, and there was nothing Steve could do to stop it. He retired to his personal void, Staff of Life in hand, hoping that the seeded meteor would impact on a life-sustaining world and bring about a race that would challenge the Grox, soon reaching the personal void themselves and sitting as an Alpha race and herald to the Staff of Life.
And we all know what happened to that meteor, don't we?
Meanwhile, in an uncharted sector of the galaxy, the long-exiled God That Will Come set his sights on a being known as Crogenitor Xylan, and his runaway experiments with E-DNA...
Heh, thanks. Tried to get this in one post, but Steam bugged out on me. Glad you like it!
Well, my lore doesn't follow the game exactly. I know the Grox tend to keep to themselves where they are in-game, but I never said that what I write is gospel.
