I enjoyed R1 for the same reasons too, and was nearly always out of warps the whole time because I used them as I got them. Didn't make that mistake on R2.
Additional tipp for that: The later warps have a higher starting point, so instead of leveling a lower warp you can just do a later warp once and skip 10+ levels, which would take 3 or more warp cores otherwise.
I don't think I ever had that situation but I could certainly see it happening on reinforce 2 or higher.
Even on R4 i didn't spend a warp core at the start until i reached a new node. it makes speeding to 74 much much easier as you can establish your crew with only a few warp cores and get he reduced warp times from Vshards/crew so you don't have to sit and wait. i got back to 85+ 24hours into R4 and that is one of the reasons it's better. also making sure you keep fully loaded on warp cores before you transition to the upgrade and use them when you hit a warp milestone or significant jumps. (no consumables used until sector 88)
