Does the laser boost automator work with the game closed?

I just discovered how good the laser boost is for pushing but does the game take the laser boost automator when running it's calculations with the game closed?

From what I understand no battle calculations are ran when offline. You don't progress sectors obviously. And for resources, like salvage, I heard it basically takes your last 5 minutes or so.
I don't know how crew or research work for this.

Okay. So I basically leave the game running when pushing with auto laser boost and then switch modules and core upgrades when closing the game?

Offline doesn't care what your battle stats are, it's based only on your distance basically. This means you should save and quit at the furthest boss you can (this changes after sector 75 apparently) unless you intend to farm a specific shard in which case you should go to the highest sector that drops that shard. You don't need to switch modules unless you are switching to something like increased compute power, and swapping core upgrades wouldn't matter at all.
