Really really long time ago the Dev posted that the unfocused was just an extra bonus but admitted it didn't make much difference in the long run as you have to min max everything eventually. this is also more obvious as that went away with Capital and Specimen research.
What was your reason for wanting to deselecting a focus?
You can look at it as "forced", but it's more like you unlock the ability to focus and in a perfect world you would focus them all if you could, you know because of the bonus to research for the focused thing.
Augment. Magnify. Amplify. Enhance. Promote. Nurture. Stimulate.
There's loads of synonyms for "boost" to name only a few.
For what it's worth, this isn't the first time I saw someone ask this question.
