The player limit is 6 from the outset in the boardgame. The number of available characters to choose increases with each expansion not the player limit. I havent seen anyone say we will be able to have 6 players yet. If you could provide link to that comment we would be grateful...
Yeah, player limit wont be a concern for a few months yet lol.
One of the main goals when designing this game was to get the game time down, and having a maximum of 4 players definitely helps with that.
Totally agree with that, for online play 4 players will be fine time wise, for local multiplayer people wont worry about time so much about having 6 in the game. Ultimately the game should eventually have the option. I think customisation of game rules/options will be a big thing here and so long as there are toggle switches for features and enough settings you should be able to keep everyone happy.
At the UK Games Expo in Birmingham last year we played a late game of Talisman using our house rule which is Battle Royale alternate ending by a pre-set game finish time if there is no obvious end to the game (ie. no one is in the inner region or powerful enough with a chance). It worked really well after one and half hours of play we had a battle between two people and a winner decided. For those that don't know Battle Royale summons all characters with a Talisman to do combat. People without a Talisman automatically lose.
Perhaps have some quick game automatic rule set ups included in the online play menu to get people started with a fast game. If you have a six player time limit game with the Battle Royale ending there should be no issues with people not being able to complete a game. It also fits thematically as well, as a Talisman is still required to stand a chance to win.
