The same logic would work for anyone, none of the characters are really unique. I mean, is there only one dwarf, elf or troll in the world?
The characters who go for the crown, or boss, or whatever the ending may be are not the common versions of their archetypes, they are the best of the best. Surely knowing that the best warrior in the land died in his attempt toward the ending would be discouraging.
So I'll revise my exception for the Apprentice Mage: New Apprentice of a Different Wizard.
Also, characters who are good at gaining stats are very good, so I agree with the opinion most people have of the Dark Cultist. She's especially powerful if you're on the crown of command with another player, and you've both stockpiled massive amounts of lives. Combat started at slightly in my favour, and after enough turns, I gained enough strength to auto-kill by the end.
I've played the ♥♥♥♥♥ once, and liked her ability to claim other people's spells, and the ability to ignore events, although it does provide an amusing mental image to be asked if you want to use your power of fortelling to avoid market day, or if you want to throw caution to the wind and be affected as normal. Spell claiming is however, something that works best with other characters who gain spells each turn, and does allow you to avoid spells that are situational enough to do little more than take up space in your spell list.
My friend played as the Warlock when I played as the ♥♥♥♥♥. She didn't like the Warlock at all, she found that getting all spells back each turn wasn't as good as it sounded, as most of her spells she couldn't find a use for. Her favorite character, going back to when she was playing the physical version long before we ever met, is the Prophetess, who still always has spells, but her ability to avoid unwanted adventure cards is a really nice ability.
Recently tried the Swashbuckler, his ability to add one to rolls in the tavern is interesting, but I only used it once. Drawing another card in the fields is good if your feeling lucky, and if used right can help you build up stats quickly, especially with the ability to take another turn after winning a battle.
Runestones make all the difference tho - I'd play these without, but nearlly all of them with the choice of Gold Runes
Hate playing against Amazons, but only because of the time it takes for all those damn re-rolls ;)

I think the dark cultist and minstrel are really good classes but just cannot compare to these top 5 for me
1. Druid: My main character. Love his ''flexibility'' and get's new spells in forest. is weak in strength though, but I no care. DRUID 4 EVAH!!!
2. Warlock: Unlimited spells, need I say more?
3. Warrior: Cuts down anyone in his path pretty much.
4. Black Witch: The Anti Mage of Talisman, amazing if you play against many mages and spell users
5: Assassin: Assassinate = Death. Amazing if you like killing other players ;)
Honrable mentions:
♥♥♥♥♥, Gambler, Amazon, Troll, Dark Cultist.
Take care :3
My friends encountered some badass farmers in the tavern in the physical version last night. So yes, those are the best farmers in the land too.
Of course one friend was playing as the Necromancer, the other as the Ghoul, and in DE the farmer wields a pitchfork. It's a holy pitchfork!
I ranked dwarf lower than some, but I think with expansions you get cave and maze less and abilities not so useful vs. ice queen ending. If you are playing w just the original game and race to the crown he gets significantly better. I haven't had a chance to play gambler yet so not sure how effective tweeking the rolls turns out to be. The minstrel gets weaker with every expansion as a lower percentage of followers are the maiden/princess, while the sorceress gets a little stronger for the opposite. Also I think the philosopher becomes ok late game when things become a little cluttered
