Talisman: Digital Classic Edition

Cursed Glade has quite a few mistakes!
Space instructions for Cursed Glade:

Strength and Craft derived from Objects and Magic Objects do not count on this space, nor may you use Magic Objects or cast Spells.

FAQ pg 3:

Do the instructions on the Cursed Glade still affect a character landing there, even if he chooses to encounter another character instead of the space? - No. (Same idea as the Desert, Chapel, and Graveyard preventing loss of life if the character is encountered.)

List of Game Observations

1. Currently, characters receive a modifier in battle, at least against other characters, from "regular" objects such as the Axe. This is wrong; while regular objects can be used, added Strength and Craft cannot. Some objects (e.g. Axe, Runesword), whether regular or magic objects, have abilities in addition to ones which grant Strength or Craft. A magic object (e.g. Runesword) would have all these abilities nullified, but a regular object (e.g. Axe, Scimitar) would only have the Strength or Craft bonus nullified, whether in battle or not.

I have not tested whether magic objects with permanent effects like the Amulet are nullified on the Cursed Glade, but all magic objects should be nullified, whether or not the ability is permanent or optional. (Generally, if a character cannot "use" a card, it means nothing in the text box can apply, whether optional or permanent.)

2. Correctly, Spells and Magic Objects cannot be used and Strength and Craft from Magic Objects (e.g. Ring, Solomon's Crown) are deducted... but incorrectly they are penalized simply by landing on the Cursed Glade and the penalty lasts until the character leaves the glade. This penalty should only happen when the character lands on the space and encounters the space. So, characters on the glade should have full use of spells and all objects when:
a) They begin their turn on the glade,
b) They land on the glade and encounter a character.
c) It is another player's turn.
Only when characters actually land on the glade and encounter the space should their spells and objects be nullified, and the penalty should then be lifted at the beginning of the next player's turn.

Probably the most perplexing combination is the Amulet and the Cursed Glade. A character with the Amulet who lands on the Cursed Glade and encounters another character would not have his Amulet nullified (so the Amulet, not the glade, will prevent him from casting spells). All other characters (including his opponent on the glade) could cast spells, but not on the player with the Amulet (effect of the Amulet). However, if the player with the Amulet were to encounter the space, the Amulet would be nullified - but he would still be unable to cast spells (the effect of the glade). In this case, all his opponents, whether on the glade or not, can cast spells but this time can target him (Amulet nullified). In both scenarios, the Amulet's function would return at the beginning of the next player's turn. This means while other players take their turns, he cannot cast spells - but it is not because of the glade's effects; it is due to the Amulet. Normally, a character on the cursed glade could still cast spells on opponent's turn.

Well written. Totally agree with you!
Thank you :)
I agree they are the official rules, but I still prefer to make it the space. This seems to be a pretty common house rule from applied not only by our group, but others as well. It can even up the game by hitting a player with the amulet or even the score in battle with another character.

Just my 2 cents.. a nice one to add to the House Rules.
the penaltyies for encountering the cursed glade stay with the character until they leave the cursed glade,. if another character encounters a character that is at the cursed glade and encountered it, then the second player has no penalty as they are not encountering the cursed glade, but they are encountering the character that is already there.
is summery
player 1 encounter cursed glade, has penalty effect applied until they leave
player 2 enocoutners player 1 (with penalty still in effect) player 2 has no penalty as they do not encounter the space
Don't agree Ososober on that!
from the rule book

A Wizard with a Craft value of 5 has Solomon’s
Crown (a Magic Object which adds 2 to his
Craft), so his Craft is effectively 7. This allows
him three Spells, which he has acquired. He
lands on the Cursed Glade, where he cannot
count Craft gained from Magic Objects. His
Craft drops to 5. He is now only allowed two
Spells, so he must immediately discard one.
A soon as he leaves the Cursed Glade, he can
count the Craft for Solomon’s Crown again and
may once more have three Spells, if he can
acquire another"

so this states that the player is still under the effect of the cursed glade until they move of the space

Rule book page 13
from the FAQ Page 3

Cursed Glade
Q: Do the instructions on the Cursed Glade still affect a
character landing there, even if he chooses to encounter
another character there instead of the space?
A: No. The instructions on the Cursed Glade only affect a
character encountering the space. Note that the Valley of Fire
requires a character to have a Talisman
before
he lands on the
space. Even if a character encounters another character on
the Valley of Fire, he must still have a Talisman to enter the
space
Hmm...what do you think, Ell? The rulebook and FAQ seem to conflict.
I think the explicit ruling of the FAQ trumps the semantics of the rulebook.

A character who encounters the Cursed Glade should be under its effects until they leave the Cursed Glade. A character who lands on the Cursed Glade but does not encounter the space should not be under its effects.
