Can Friends use my characters?

we just tested it with that setting and my buddies mentioned the characters are still greyed out. Do they also have to purchase them?

Game Setup

2.1 Q. Do all players in one game need to have purchased the expansions?
A. Only one player in the group needs an expansion and it will be available to everyone. The exception are characters, who can only be chosen by those who have purchased them or the expansions in which they appear.

2.2 Q. How do I prevent duplicate characters upon starting or respawning?
A. Enable "Random Characters" under House Rules. These are "Classic Rules."

2.3 Q. How do I deal 3 random characters and choose 1?
A. Enable "Random Characters," then choose "Character Selection."

2.4 Q. I enabled "Random Characters" and "Character Selection," but still got duplicates and we weren't dealt 3 characters. What happened?
A. Someone chose a character during start-up, which automatically disables both options.

If a player doesnt own the character, they cannot select them manually during game setup. However, if random character selection is enabled, anyone can be dealt any character that has been enabled for the game.
So your friends can use your characters if they choose random.

Hey Guys thanks for the reply's. Not going to lie this is really silly and seems to be a major cash grab. If someone owns the physical board game and pieces, everyone doesn't need to pay to play with his pieces. especially considering there is no cost to them as it's digital they should allow others to choose characters. If they're confident in their product they should know it will encourage others to buy them as well.

As an alternative, you can use a program called Parsec to do local play over the internet, and play the game in local hotseat mode online that way. Steam Remote play may also accomplish the same thing.

Another bonus to this is your friends don't even need to own the game.

Character selection is the draft from 2-5 random characters. Not the manual character selection.
