Rune Sword

So I have the rune sword. The card says that when I defeat an enemy or a character and make it lose a life, I gain a life.
Why does killing monsters not seem to count as defeating an enemy?
At first I though there was no affect because I was at full health, thinking maybe it only heals you instead of giving you a whole lot of life, but later I had taken dame, and I didn't get any health back from defeating monsters then, either.
What am I missing?

The possible sources of not gaining a life :
- maybe you are in the woodlands with the path that prevents you from gaining life
- maybe someone reached the crown and you have " no more lives" houserule activated
- maybe you killed the enemy with a spell or an ability, which does not count as defeating
- maybe you faced the enemy in psychic combat and not in battle

Another one - maybe your character cannot use weapons in battle.

Another possibility is that you are facing a creature on the board such as the Crags spirit, Forest bandits, Eagle King, Lord of Darkness etc..

In these cases, the Runesword won't work because you are not defeating an "enemy".
You need to have that subtype via a card in order to gain the life.

You may have had some magic dampening effect in place, for example Destroy Magic/Cursed Glade that suppresses Magic Objects.

No, it was a lot of battles all over the map, and it doesn't offer me the option to use the rune sword with psychic combats. This character was the first one to the crown, too. Every time I was given the chance to use it, I watched my health, never went up once.

Are you sure you selected the Runesword before starting the battles?
There are a few characters in Talisman who can't use Weapons at all.
What character did you play?

Yeah and you have to click on the weapon to use it. If you click on the right button before clicking on the weapon it will cancel your choice

Yes, I did select it, so it must have been a class that could use it. I think it was the Druid, or maybe the Assassin.

I always clicked on the check mark, not the X, and it always showed the plus one when showing the battle numbers.
