Three dragons take turns being king. You draw a dragon token at each beginning of turn, and place it on the matching dragon card (yellow for cadorus, green for grillipus, red for varthrax). Whenever there are three tokens, the said dragon becomes King, and you place a token on your space. Sometimes you draw a Sleep token and have to place it on a dragon, or a regular enemy if there are no dragons. Asleep enemies get -3 to their str/craft (cannot go below 1), until they are awoken. Sometimes you are less lucky and draw a Dragon Rage token instead - based on the color of the dragon King you have to discard either 1 item, 1 follower or 1 spell - if you can't, then you lose 1 life.

If you land on a scale and a Dragon of the matching color is king, you have to draw from his deck instead of encountering the space (and drawing adventure cards). If he is not king, you have the choice between the space (adventure cards) or drawing a dragon card.

Dragon cards are divided in 3 decks : Varthrax (red) deck, Grillipus (green) deck, and Cadorus (yellow) deck. The red deck only contains Strength enemies. The green deck only contains Craft enemies. The yellow deck contains a bit of both.

If you manage to win a battle / psychic combat against a dragon card (a card from one of the three dragon decks) while standing on a scale, you gain that scale. In particular, that scale grants you +1 to your attack roll per enemy of the matching color.

Say you have 3 yellow scales and you fight 2 yellow enemies. Then that's +6 to your attack score.

For the strats, i recently wrote a post about it, i will just copy paste it here:

The rule to really remember when dealing with dragons is the dragon token encounter rule: you have no choice but to do draw dragon card if you land on a token that matches the color of the current dragon king.

In the early game you should avoid drawing dragon cards. Personally i'm only starting to draw dragon cards when i am strong enough (str/craft of 5, and it's day) to beat the first few enemies; and i have sufficient lives to deal with a potential ilfe loss. Once you get your first dragon token, it becomes much easier to deal with dragon cards from the said deck. Once you get 2-3 dragon tokens of the same color, you can farm the dragon cards from this color basically at will.

You should also pay attention to the dragon rages. In particular, it's very risky to have only 1 item if Cadorus is king. I know folks who buy Flail in the City when they have 5 gold, but then sometimes they lose the Flail because of a Cadorus dragon rage.

In late game you should be mindful of the Dragonspire[www.talismanwiki.com] and Great Portal[www.talismanwiki.com] cards that can grant immediate teleportation to the Crown. If you play with the Dragon Tower inner region, you should also be mindful of the Faerie Dragon[www.talismanwiki.com] that can grant you immediate teleport to the Crown as well (from the tower inner region).

Ah, I'd like to thank you too, this expansion is a head-scratcher if you're coming into it cold and they do a pretty appalling job of explaining the rules. You've laid it out pretty clearly here though, thanks! 8)

To be fair, the physical edition board game did a poor job of explaining the rules too. I had to wait for the digital edition counter-part to be able to understand the expansion better.

For a large amount of time I thought the Monk was the best character - indeed, I didn't think that "Craft Value" and "Craft" would be two different things!
