Low fps issue
Hi, I have a problem with Viscera where each time I launch the game, the fps decreases to something lower than it should be for I don't know what reason (varies from 30 to 70 fps). The weird thing is, whenever I restart my PC (or just even logging out and logging back in) and starts the game straight after that, I get way better fps (around 100 to 130 fps). What's causing it?

I'm using Windows 11 with an NVidia GeForce RTX 3070.
I followed most instructions provided by "The Grinch" (aka "A JANITOR") in some other posts:
- bDisablePhysXHardwareSupport=False
- PhysXGpuHeapSize=256
- PhysXMeshCacheSize=8
- bSmoothFrameRate=True
- MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
- MaxSmoothedFrameRate=146 (I have a 144Hz Gaming monitor and I don't see why I'd have to go lower since I was able to play the game at over 100fps)
- Launching with -DX11 commandline
- Almost all graphics options are maxed out (and I even tried lowering them all to the lowest and the problem still persists)
- PhysX driver is up to date
- GSync is disabled (my monitor doesn't support it anyway)
- Performance is set to Gaming in both Windows and NVidia Control Panel
- Dunno what "adaptive multisampling" is but is it really gonna change anything?

There's something that affects the FPS of this game over time, especially if, for instance, I'm playing another game and come back to play it, the fps "stalls" or I don't know what. How to fix please? Thanks

in the game options disable autosave autosaves are useless n hog hdd space
manual saves are the way to go esp since autosaving causes lag spikes

solution restart pc then play vcd after powering on pc for the day
did ya set the compatability options of both 32 and 64 bit UDK.exe to run as administrator compatability mode for windows 7=do that if ya didn't
also in steam launch options for vcd put -DX11
play 64 bit vcd

set monitor refresh to 60hz or 59.99 game run better and it fix hdmi dropouts n get rid of screen tearing vs 4k high speed hdmi cord

gsync sux adaptive multisampling is better=also better for most ya other games

pickup highlighting=turn that off xd your a professional cleaner

also if have nvidia gpu when ya update ya video driver update the physx driver as its two seperate driver downloads from nvidia website

AMD or intel=physx is built into video driver

also make sure all 3 versions of this 32 and 64 bit are installed from microsoft website=

i play vcd in 4k 3840 x 2160 vs huge 4k tv as monitor
fps hang around 100 even if its set at 100 it still spike at 120 if ya turn vsync off
usually leave vsync on=stops ya fans from screaming at ya

Bugrosoft Bugrows 10 and when ya clean a map it runs even faster the cleaner it gets
100 fps on a fully dirty map 120 fps on clean level

even if i set my display refresh rate in windows display settings to 23 hz game still run at 100 fps=tv settings are seperate from pc settings=
TV makes an awesome monitor the tv remote has video and sound settings too that are seperate from pc settings that way nothing I install lags even if it runs on ue5 it still runs great:)

I get up to 240 fps in postal 4 on ultra settings
3090=12 fps on buttsauce=lol i hate nvidia AMD never lags or jitters it just works
got sick of jumping through hoops setting game profiles with nvidia went AMD n never looked back
also AMD not skimp on vram or the rops

i heard that new 4070 nvidia gpu might have 8gb ram
whats the point coughing up over $1000 for a gpu when an 8gb AMD rx580 is the same thing at $150 that outperform a 3090 minus the raytracing:)
lol who needs raytracing sometimes it looks terrible look at portal rtx lol they really screwed the look of good old portal xd and made it run like crap vs yuck textures

games go on 1 and 2 terrabyte sata hdd
no difference vs ssd or hdd in loading times=its fast

oh yeah check ya udkengine.ini file often
for some strange reason vcd was set back to default last friday for no reason i started steam n vcd validated itself without verifying the game cache n reset all my settings to default
lol i wondered why it was running at 40 fps instead of 100 fps:cryptothink:
had to redo my ini tweaks and setup the game options all over again
this also happens after windows updates
windows annoying update has also so far deleted and disabled my gpu driver and software twice and replaced it with laggy microsoft generic monitor driver(delete this driver)=
drives ya nuts fixing that too not to mention when windows stupid update decides to install the wrong realtek hd audio driver turning my pc into a lagging echoing zylophone as my pc uses the universal realtek driver vs the built in nahamic system sound app
if nahamic not configured right pc bsod or games lag
i hate it when microsoft screws with my pc drivers and settings=seems the norm these days n makes me wonder what i have to fix disable or delete when windows update tries to install more microsoft spyware xd

get rid of one drive is a good start to stop that crap uploading everything on ya pc 16 times a day to the cloud causing video streaming to screech to a halt with a buffering circle to watch while it tanks ya bandwidth lol

that 32 bit log reports incorrect pc specs and the game crashes in various maps esp vulcan dlc with out of video memory crashes= I have an 8gb gpu not a 3gb gpu
windows update broke 32 bit VCD in dec 2020

32 bit level editor is fine for some strange reason and windows update borked the 64 bit editor vs broken microscopic ui and icons vs bugged windows 10 dpi settings
I can only use 32 bit editor to make maps n play 64 bit game otherwise it screws the ui if i start 32 bit game or 64 bit editor n vcd start with half a giant clipboard=have to reset windows 10 dpi override settings in the compatability tab again on 32 bit udk.exe editor shortcut to fix the editor ui and the 64 bit game ui scaling

This reminds me of when windows update broke the chess engine in 64 bit rooks keep
play 32 bit game in that if wanna play chess and use 32 bit editor to make chess maps
64 bit rooks keep crashes if ya select or load a chess mode

32 bit vcd crashes out of video memory in many levels but 32 bit level editor runs fine and the ui is all screwed up in 64 bit editor vs windows 10 bugs

vcd and rooks keep use same version of level editor by same developer

goat simulator also has this problem play 64 bit goat simulator
use 32 bit level editor to make mods
bioshock and borderlands 2 and arma 3 also have this problem=microsoft broke it

lol windows 11 is the worst os ever

i got my death grip on windows 10 until its last day of support before i upgrade to an os full of ads and spyware where more than half my old box set games won't work

1 setting in my bios is preventing microsoft from forcing windows 11 to install automatically vs windows unwanted updates=thank god for that:)

disable the spyware and the ads n it probly run ok

try n stay out of big picture mode use classic library
get rid of steam cloud it causes more headaches than its worth
lose the cloud in steam global settings and the game settings in ya library
all ya stuff run much better with no cloud
ya saves won't mysteriously get deleted or broken either vs every game in ya library vs internet dropouts during gameplay or when games get updated by devs it wont install corrupt or deleted saves from previous game updates every single time ya start a game

want saves on another pc=a usb stick works wonders as usb sticks can't screw ya games like the cloud does

fyi steam cloud causes office crash at punchout bug too
clocking out of the robot map often triggers this

thats a good point and nvidia is notorious for it but AMD seems immune to it

i rarely disable vsync in everything although vcd can handle it without my fans screaming at me
anything that runs on ue5 or ue4 i just whack it on ultra n turn vsync on n it runs great

i also have 3 massive rgb led fans in my case that display my pc temperature vs it changing colours as it also setup via my fan curve settings and mystic light
green=below 40 deg c blue normal 50-70 deg c red danger 100 deg c=quick press alt + f4 xd

vcd rarely goes blue it stay green under 50 deg c

i have the stock wraith prism air cooler vs ryzen 7 cpu as pc rejected a corsair water cooler=windows 10 bugs rejected install of water cooler in pc shop

glad i went air cooled water coolers fail n when they do pc go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr then bang

and yep a clean pc is a happy pc in the hardware and pc software and pc maintenance department

144hz is a curse vs vcd set max fps to 100 it will fix input lag vs the janitor walking around

vcd never slow down quite often i will binge a editor session for longer than 24 hours n do a ton of testing in 64 bit game for like 8 hours strait with no issues
I also optimize my levels performance while i am at it to stop everyone with a 4090 from complaining about lag lol not to mention the 2070 super the worst gpu ever made vs millions of lag complaints in every steam game forum and swamped complaints vs online nvidia forums

factory reset the gpu driver if ya have a 3060 a 3070 a 4090 or 3090 nvidia really screwd its drivers
avoid the 6000 series of AMD gpu's the chip is prone to crazing and cracking aka will self destruct vs metal and temperature fatigue
wait for 7000 series
avoid the 4090 vs $2 cables n components it may burn ya house down=wait for nit wits at nvidia to fix fire hazard cable problem let alone hire adults to assemble it in the factory instead of doing a nike n paying kids 1 cent a shoe

vcd runs at 60 fps in hrydro hell with 2 gb ram and a melted gpu slot on an i5 boat anchor with 32 mb of video memory without a gpu on a hdd from 1995 with a half blown psu with wires spliced from the cd drive to turn the hdd on xd even while struggling to run windows 8.1
had to take out faulty ram and lick it like nintendo cartridges n put it back in to stop old pc from boot looping and slam dunk pc tower on the desk to turn the monitor on lol n vcd still ran fine for 2 years on a pc that had a rather scary motherboard fire when its old 1gb gpu exploded while watching a yt video n it blew the a hole out of the fuse box outside but not enough memory to start goat simulator even tho vcd and goat sim have identical build number of ue3 dev kit and that kentucky fried toaster never lagged in vcd after i sticky taped it back together n put a bag of ice on the 1 and only broken cpu fan in that pc as well as making 30 vcd workshop maps on that pc without a video card while everyone with nvidia and alienware sent me lag complaints=erm what lag

Thanks for the replies. I tried again yesterday after a VR session and when I started the game, the fps were terribly below 30 just at launch. Today, I just tried launching the game after a little while and it seems to cap at 90. It's very weird.

Steam cloud sync is already disabled, same for autosave, but those have nothing to do with performance.

Tried running Viscera 64bit (I always use 64bit) in Windows 7 compatibility and as an admin: nothing has changed.

I don't understand the issue of having the fps set to 144, I haven't experienced slow-mo and it has always played smoothly. According to PCGamingWiki on their VCD page, setting it above 144 would cause the player to walk faster, but I never go above 144.

I'm also aware that the game options reset once in a while for I don't know why, and it's annoying, but I keep tweaking everything back to what I want.

I tried the tweaks in the link provided (except the Core Isolation thingy because, heh, I don't wanna disable it just for a single game) and again, I don't see any differences.

V-Sync is already enabled.

I suppose I could try to lower the MaxSmoothedFrameRate to half my monitor's refresh rate (72) and see if that improves things, but if I still get lower fps, there's definitely something wrong with this game or UE3.

yeah seems unusual
i have a few steam friends that say janitor walk slo mo with input lag if 144 or higher

100 seems to hit the spot for me n most others but yeah maybe even try increasing or decreasing the min smoothed framerate

anyway sailing unchartered waters vs windows 11 vs a old engine from 2013 and it already has its fair share of gremlins vs windows 10

who knows maybe the next steam beta update a windows update or a gpu driver update might sort out having to restart ya pc for it to run fast on the 1st try instead of the next one

no harm in temporarily trying that even if turn ya router off n try it in steam offline mode?
just switch it back on before ya turn the internet back on

Unreal Engine 3 FPS Increase
UDK config tweak settings! changing these or altering these using the methods below will increase speed
as a trade off for reducing overall graphics quality(great for config tweakers or low end graphics cards)
DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for this guide messing you're system up, always make sure to backup
you're data.However I explain these settings very thoroughly. So don't modify udk or you're operating
system unless you are a advanced user and know exactly what you are doing.These settings will also work

---allows dynamic lights(light shafts) to peer through objects like windows or inbetween

Safe folders to delete to reduce UDK's size if you just use udk scripting and world editing only.
deleting these folders reduces fragmentation on mechanical hard drives and reduces reads and writes on

to get more speed from you're operating system you can optionally do these tweaks!

disable indexing (right click c:\ drive go to properties uncheck index this drive, apply to sub folders
and c:\ and ignore, ignore all)

run command prompt as administrator and use this command to enhance o/s speed and use 4+gb less data on
drive. powercfg /hibernate off
this command is especially great for solid state drives. it turns hibernate off, some pc's freak out
when hibernate is enabled

minimize startup items to allocate more RAM for UDK. use msconfig or windows start up manager or even
a alternative startup manager to disable items you only manually run to save more RAM for UDK as UDK
uses quite a bit of RAM!

Defrag if you use a mechanical hard drive

disable anti aliasing in you're ati or nvidia control panel and set for PERFORMANCE

IF you have a solid state drive disable pagefile in:
control panel,system and security,system,advanced system settings,PERFORMANCE>settings>advanced>
virtual memory>change set for 400mb intial and maximum to reduce pagefile(virtual RAM) or just
completely disable it using the "No paging file" option.

that's about it! if you have anything to add that will optimize UDK for performance or increase
response time or speed feel free to add a tweak!!!also if I got anything wrong you can point it out for sure.

mess around with the above values but try n keep ya quality up vs pc hardware being much better now than back then
disable some things but increase others
ie disable antialising without noticing the difference cuz ya increased another setting to compensate
i gonna try a few of those n will let ya know if it maybe even doubles the fps without sacrificing visual quality

fps seems a little higher and more stable than direct x is

use overgrowth map to test it out on vcd lots of trees that eat lots of memory

lol n AMD is notorious for really bad open gl drivers so it probly work way better on nvidia
fortunately fixing beavis and butthead in virtual stupidity somehow fixed the open gl driver bug vs my AMD gpu n also had to enable a legasy windows feature to let me install really old versions of game redist files from windows 95 to fix the cutscenes not working
fixing beavis n butthead fixed open gl not working in pcsx2 bluestacks and pj64 too along with pretty much any game that supports open gl esp the scumm engine from the monkey island series without having to run those in dosbox
works well on the dig sam n max kings quest all the sierra stuff and lucas arts titles
it was good for also fixing lighthouse the dark being direct from windows instead of dosbox

usually open gl pretty dicy in my games but VCD seems to like it more than it likes direct x n seems to also look better as well as eliminate some annoying camera movement flickering
fps also seems more steady instead of taking steep dives it crawls its way up to 100 fps n almost stays there

right now to see if messing with the core and pool size setting do anything

game is running like a dream smooth as a hot lighsabre through frozen butter on an ice skating rink=
lovely and every map loads so fast i don't even see the loading screen anymore it loads right in instantly and the main menu also runs way better it trippled the fps
game no longer hangs with a black screen for 60 seconds when i start vcd too like it always did on 1st run vs turning pc on=awsome now i don't have to left click the black screen for the main menu to load in on 1st run on pc power on=my am i glad it fixed that windows 10 bug
now it same as second time i start vcd=no black screen hang bug=finally thats fixed

the map is really big running in 4k open gl at 3840 x 2160 1080 p

I think this is as best as I can tweak it without sacrificing visualy quality

if i lower the res to 1920 x 1080 every map stays way above 80 fps

i disabled the smooth framerate option but left vsync on n it goes to above 120 fps here n there

antialising and anistrophic filtering is disabled
disabling antialising fixes shadows on terrain not working bug too as i also upscaled the shadow res in my maps settings to get rid of blocky shadows=now i see a human shadow from my janitor instead of a minecraft creeper lol

my gpu also has a few settings like enable gpu super resolution to upscale the games graphics vs playing VCD in 4k
also lets me upscale picture sharpness and can also turn on anti lag which works wonders in every game no matter how new it is it runs nice
enable gpu scaling is also nice in my AMD adrenalin settings using the latest driver

I might as well post my ini file settings esp since iv'e more than trippled the max performance of VCD into something very nice but also nice n smooth

It seems my problem is related with GPU usage. Again, just a few minutes ago, started the game in 64 bit and I ended up with a mediocre 15-20 fps just at the main menu. GPU usage was under 10%. I logged off Windows and logged back in and started the game again: fps went up to 144fps with GPU usage at 50%. How can I increase the GPU usage on that game?

sounds like a windows spyware 11 thing
telling microsoft to f off n fix windows buggy 11 is a good start if it works nice on logging in twice xd

right I will post my ini file settings

I might lower the core setting from 8 to 4 tho as i do get a pause here n there but that was probly autosave as that was on
i turn that off n restart the game before i lower the physical core setting to 4 as 8 might be fine for my cpu
