Indeed, anyone who wants to test it out, or just simply use it, can opt in to the beta.
And if you're willing, I'd like to try and connect to a few games in this way, get a feel for its performance.
I shall send you a friend invite, Janitor.
Message me when it's a good time for you.
Without the client on controller it's not gunna properly work as VCD's local-coop is built like this. Or am I reading something wrong here?
I'd give it a shot but I have no controller to play as client.
The plan next is to try and setup the game to already be in splitscreen mode before inviting another player, that way there is a 2nd pawn to be controlled.
We did the reverse, I hosted 2 controllers and KB, started split screen and again when AJ joined in it was 3 player, him adding the 3rd.
We tried again, me hosting, two controllers plugged in and KB, but this time, I didn't split screen, and when AJ joined he joined as player 2, starting the split. (Him using controller me on KB/M)
So it seems to be working, took me a little work setting up my controllers in steam setup but got there in the end.
Zero crashes or any issues of that sort. Lag was pretty noticeable, but me and AJ are literally half a world away from each other, Uk to AUS.
The only thing I noticed, and it may have been the lag, is when AJ brought up the pda tool (5) I could no longer move, I can only assume this part of the game being in coop therefore the game thinks p1 and 2 are the same and pauses for both players.
Hopefully that's some help to you guys.
Nice work!
Unfortunately, if I'm reading this right. No one was able to setup a 2-player splitscreen game without having multiple controllers on the host side?
You weren't able to get both client and host to have a single controller each, but control different characters?
You also weren't able to get one player to have a keyboard and mouse, the other a single controller and be able to control two different characters?
If I added a keyboard key to activate splitscreen, it might help.
Did you try dragging the icons on the Remote Play screen?
Apparently if you drag the input icons around, you can re-order what player they respond to.
Otherwise, I guess steam doesn't have a way to selectively send input from one device to a given player's input stream, and instead just automatically assumes an order.
Doesn't help that the UDK allows one no way to manipulate input before it's automatically assigned a player index.
The last test we did was a 2player split screen instead of 3.
I think at that point I only had one controller plugged in. Honestly I was rushing around at the time, sorting kids and cooking, so it's a bit of a blur.
I hosted with the 1 controller as p1 and I think AJ joined via controller and caused the game to go into splitscreen. Will have to try that one out again.
But for me at least, despite having to setup my controller in steam, everything worked outtta the box, no need for any tweaks or workarounds.
As for controls, I didn't know they could be moved. I did test enabling and disabling controllers, but that was when p2 was controlling p1.
If we get another chance to play together, I'll get some more tests in with AJ but 12hr time difference is hard to work with. One of us has to be up at a silly time.
A button to force split screen might help if just 1 controller doesn't work correctly.
The other option would be to change the control systems so that kb/m and controller 1 don't share the same pawn, if that's possible with this version of udk.
So in summary
1)At the time of testing we both had 2 pads plugged in however...
2)Possibly, I need to re-test this one. At one point I'm sure I had only 1 controller active, and AJ joined as p2, (no 3 way split)
3)Not at all, the 1st controller added ALWAYS takes control of P1 pawn and shares control with kb/m
1) One controller each works 100%. Both me and AJ took turns hosting, starting with just one player (no split). Once connected to the 2nd player, pressing start as usual split the screen into 2 player coop mode.
2)More than one controller can be used by host or client. In the testing AJ had 3 controllers going (3 way split) when I joined split it again making it 4 player split.
This brings 4 player local coop into the frame. 4 friends, one controller each will work fine.
3)Big picture mode or not makes no difference to playing ( connection wise or other ), AJ was using BP mode, I didn't. The only difference being I could see everything AJ did, chatting etc.
4)Thanks to Steam, all pads work fine. Ps3,4,xbox and even phone link, all worked fine.
So in conclusion, I'd say everything is running 100% as intended. No crashes, no workarounds, no fuss.
The only thing I might suggest, if it's possible, is to allow 1st player to be keyboard only. So then only one player would need a controller. It's not a big deal and it works fine without, but would just make it more accessible for those without controllers to be a host to someone who does.
I believe AJ is setting up some logs to post for you to peruse, so that's all I can do on my end for now, unless anything else pops up.
Good work guys.
ps. Just a thought, how will dlc work? if you join a hosted dlc map will you need the dlc, or will it be bypassed due to the way remote works?
Oh nice, that's good to hear.
Yeah, definitely. I had hoped that maybe Steam input could be used to assign the first controller to player 2, instead of player 1. This is something we can't do in the UDK, annoyingly. So one always needs at least 2 controllers.
I'll need to do more testing myself, see what can be done.
Yeah, you won't need the DLC, or even the game to join a remote session I believe.
Great work, guys.
I know it's tough juggling time. It is very much appreciated.
And thanks for the logs, Janitor.
That would allow for p1 to not need a controller.
May be worth looking into.
So I hosted a game, just on my KB/m, I had no controller plugged in at all.
I joined on a 2nd pc using a controller, at 1st the controller controlled player 1. However in the control settings of Remote play I dragged the controller, currently labelled (1) across one section until it became (2). At which point pressing [start] split the screen and 2 player coop with one controller was done.
So now we know, if only one person has a controller, you can still play 2 player coop if you drag the controller over to become (2) in the remote play control setting screen.
No need to add a split screen button, no need to seperate kb/m from the player 1 controller bindings.
Works 100% of the time, everytime. At least on my 2 computers.
Good to see it does in-fact do what I wanted it to.
I'll be doing a couple more tests myself and the like, then gather some info to put in a post.
Thanks for the assist.
