There's an option to drag the input device from player 1 to 2 etc under your name while playing look at steam overlay chat I think there's controller options under your name
Been a while as I use my phone and a controller
Canonfodder knows how and there's plenty of info on remote play together in the remote play together testing thread
It's in Caps look a few pages ahead of this post.
It has a few setup Guides and all the info of getting it working properly

So yeah it is possible to split the keyboard and mouse away from the other character

I did not understand what to look for

ok i found your discussion called: REMOTE PLAY TOGETHER & REMOTE PLAY ANYWHERE INFO, but what do you mean by a supported device
Sazzouu Apr 2, 2021 @ 7:15am
It is not possible for two players to play Keyboard and Mouse on Remote Play Together.
Don't see it as the game running on two machines but rather see it as Remote Play Together simulates plugging the devices on the remote players end right into your machine.

If you plug two keyboards into the same PC you would have the very same result as your PC does not separate between KBM1 and KBM2 but only KBM. Thats why it works with one controller and one keyboard as you machine CAN separate between KBM and Controller.

Remote Play Together is basically simulating USB devices

thanks anyway for the information

Sazzou has a point there especially if you doing split screen co-op on 1 PC

One can bypass it if the client joins online from a different PC
Ones mobile phone=
Mobile phone is PC Number 2 also let ya play on one PC with mouse n keyboard and 1 controller if ya don't have 2 controllers
Host is over your WiFi on a mobile phone via steam link app that has kB n mouse controls from the host PC and touch screen controls on the phone too=combination of both touch and kB n mouse controls
Client is using the same PC with a controller both sitting on the same couch looking at it

Sounds confusing but works well

OK my hopefully final test, and good news all round!!!

So I hosted a game, just on my KB/m, I had no controller plugged in at all.
I joined on a 2nd pc using a controller, at 1st the controller controlled player 1. However in the control settings of Remote play I dragged the controller, currently labelled (1) across one section until it became (2). At which point pressing [start] split the screen and 2 player coop with one controller was done.

So now we know, if only one person has a controller, you can still play 2 player coop if you drag the controller over to become (2) in the remote play control setting screen.

No need to add a split screen button, no need to seperate kb/m from the player 1 controller bindings.

Works 100% of the time, everytime. At least on my 2 computers.

Yeah so can't do it on 1 PC but if a friend join online through remote play then it's two computers
Canonfodder did that when I was hosting and it stopped the keyboard controlling the same character it split the screen so one could use mouse n kB and I could use Xbox controller for player 1 a mobile phone for player 2 and a PS3 controller for player 3
Fodder was player 4
So 4 seperate controllable characters player 4 joined my game from the UK while I'm in Australia he used keyboard n mouse after switching the control options around

Big picture mode has more controller settings you can even rebind keys etc and I can also plug an Xbox controller into my phone with an otg cable to use that or play the game entirely from my phone touch screen after creating a new touch input profile via the steam link app
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2367642994

Don't need the steam link app if doing PC to PC

For PS3 controller I installed the PlayStation now app on PC
Plug PS3 controller into charge cable n plug into PC it lets me play VCD with wireless PS3 controllers on USB

The settings fodder was talking about I'm pretty sure it's in steam chat while playing look under your name there two icon that looks like a Xbox controller=you can swap em around to untether the kB and mouse from controlling the same character and have 2 seperate controllable characters 1 with kB n mouse the other with a controller
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2369383115
Player 4 was canonfodder using kB n mouse I had 3 seperate controllable characters 1 android phone on touch screen controls 1 Xbox 360 controller and a wireless PS3 controller plugged in to PC with the USB charging cable via the PlayStation now app as that lets you use PS3 controllers if it a wireless one on a tethered connection
If have a jailbroken iPhone/ipad or a r00ted android phone/tablet one can use the steam link app and pair wireless PS3 controller via Bluetooth to ya phone and use your phone as the TV screen steam link app will recognise the controller
Do that to get around Sony stupid controller DRM so it lets you use it on a phone
So in the pic with 4 players if myself and fodder used the keyboard it wouldn't control the same character as fodder split the input and Disabled my keyboard and mouse input=BINGO 4 seperate controllable characters

My android phone can't be jailbroken
So can't use PS3 controller on my phone but it lets me plug my Xbox controller into my phone with otg cable USB adaptor

I guess it be better on an iPad or Android tablet with a bigger screen if you use the steam link app

PS5 PS4 n pretty much any console controller works too as steam big picture emulates any controller as an Xbox 360 controller
Same with phone touch controls
If use phone touch controls you setup a custom controller profile

One can also Disable keyboard and mouse sharing through steam

Also if have 1 controller and 1 PC n do split screen co-op at home with 2 players use the steam link app and start VCD with your phone go into split screen co-op and start a map then on PC use a controller to join
Person using the phone will have kB and mouse but also have pH touch screen controls
Person with the controller has the controller
Can do that if you don't have more than 1 controller/gamepad etc

So yeah can't use kB n mouse on 1 PC but if the client join online from a different computer it should let you split the input so can both have kB n mouse if nobody has a controller
That or 1 of you needs a controller
Oh but nobody has a controller=
Yes you do if ya got a mobile phone that is a valid controller=install the steam link app

With an online game only the host has to own the game
Client doesn't have to have the game installed so can play VCD with any steam friends in split screen co-op as it streams everything from the host machine
So your friends can't afford the DLC or the game well as long as you have it then they can join and play it with you when you host it=client doesn't need to buy or install the game.
Steam workshop maps work too.

If steam link app connection is choppy or lagging on your phone Disable hardware encoding in steam big picture advanced remote play settings
It runs the same as it does when ya play it on your PC=nice n smooth no lag at all

For VCD on your phone look for the free steam link app in the iOS and Android stores
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3629-riav-1617
look at that link to see how to setup remote play together and remote play anywhere features

Sorry I'm using my phone to write this so it takes a while to copy links etc

So if nobody has a controller or a mobile phone

hey folks
more good news
if neither the host or client has a controller
one can emulate ones kb and mouse as an xbox 360 controller???

https://support.parsec.app/hc/en-us/articles/360012652092-Playing-Games-With-Two-Keyboards-Emulating-A-Controller-With-A-Keyboard

that + what canonfodder said=you can still play 2 player coop if you drag the emulated controller over to become (2) in the remote play control setting screen.

vcd have default controls=never have to touch that stuff just use steam to make any controller layout you like
https://store.steampowered.com/remoteplay
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/remoteplay
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1888830141

even online multiplayer works on my phone but both client and host have to buy the game for that to work but remote play together=the host has to own the game and client has to be a steam friend who hasnt got the game n after they play it they gonna buy it:)

heres a link to my touch input config for my phone that makes vcd playable with touch controls=
steam://controllerconfig/246900/2369484519
to open that link open firefox paste n go in adress bar it ask for steam bootstrapper press ok
im sure someone can make a much better config than me xd

if steam doesn't make it look like this on ya phone
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2368727861
edit the layout and drag the buttons to whereva ya want to put em and edit the input to however you want it to look to make it seemlessly playable on ones phone screen
mouse in ya right hand n left stick while ya hold ya phone in ya left hand is perfect for now:0
the cool thing about it is ya don't have to change anything keybinding wise in the games options
my vcd has default controls in its options

so what if ya fancy new tv or your ipad 57 (any supported touch device) has a touch screen aye=muhwahahaha

so which controller ya gonna use to play remote play together or remote play anywhere=
https://steam.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_compatible_controllers_with_Steam_Link
ps5 n xsx controllers work too=
https://toucharcade.com/2020/12/21/steam-link-ps5-controller-xbox-series-x-support-ios-android-apple-tv-update/

That stuff should help
I bumped the remote play beta test thread to the main forum page so I don't have to go fishing for links for hours
Everything needed to set it up along with troubleshooting it is in that thread
My stupid phone won't let me share links to another thread but let's me play VCD on it=haha lol

Nice if someone could write a decent remote play together and remote play anywhere guide for VCD?

As everyone knows my spelling is terrible and my grammar got married with garbage bin=getting struck by lightning in the head kinda screws with ones memory n takes about 25 years to remember what it erased.

I think the remote play beta thread should be pinned until someone with awesome grammar
(I envy you)
to write a decent remote Play together guide for VCD and have that pinned somewhere as it also be a very popular guide
It may even help fix normal multiplayer for those who could never get that working
All the online all Lan and all features of the game vs steam and mobile devices work fine for VCD

With remote play together only the host needs to buy and install the game
Clients (any steam friends) can join you in split screen co-op without buying or installing the game=
Play vcd with all your steam friends n if they like it maybe they will buy it
Great way to try games before you buy em especially with the steam link app and remote Play together steamworks features

Hopefully that somehow makes sense
Without driving you crazy

So if ya got 1 controller and a kB n mouse and a mobile phone you can split screen co-op at home or online
Start the session with your phone
Start the game With your phone go into split screen co-op in any map on your phone then join with a controller on the same PC for split screen at home
Invite a friend from any country to join
They can use a controller a phone or kB n mouse 3rd party software to emulate kB n mouse as an Xbox 360 controller

If have 2x keyboard and 2x mouse on 1 PC you can use 3rd party software to turn those into emulated Xbox 360 controllers
Just Disable keyboard and mouse sharing if do it that way so it doesn't control the same character and if it still control the same character drag the input device from 1 to 2 Like canonfodder said.

Best if have controllers but is possible without them n yes I have a headache Too however there plenty of workarounds especially if none of you have a console controller laying around the house:)
Headache tablets not included:(

Read the remote play thread I bumped up it easier than reading my technical BS xd

Hopefully that makes sense=what a head f@ck lol it actually really easy to make it work with or without using controllers:)
Ones mobile phone helps out it's a controller too and it's also a second PC screen!
My big flatscreen TV is my PC screen as just change the channel if wanna play PS2 PS3 or watch TV as my PC is in the living room and my couch is my office chair

If on a phone with a Xbox 360 controller plugged in to the phone I can play VCD on the outside toilet if I wanted to in my outhouse as the house toilet is outside or play it in bed with my iPad and fall asleep and smack myself in the head with my iPad=lol
Can also use the level editor in steam link app on my phone if take wireless mouse and keyboard with you
Backyard or back deck is a good place especially if someone is watching TV and your PC screen is said tv so someone can watch tv while I'm playing VCD on my phone

Game idea=
Totally wish the janitor could drive this thing in VCD just strap a cleaners caddy to the toilet systern and add a trailer for bins to this thing=
https://youtu.be/J3766FEkaqQ
If only vcd had a drivable vehicle so modders can add tanks planes Rollercoasters theme park rides golf buggies farm machinery=wheat slasher as drivable woodchipper hovercraft UFO's helicopters boats trains cars trucks lawn mowing equipment remote control weaponized drones power tools like drills chainsaw rockets spaceships etc the works vs workshop
Elon Musk starship would fit nice in VCD so janitor can clean earth before they clean up alien colony on Mars but ya might have to clean up the starship after it exploded on Mars as you run away from it before it blew up after it landed:)
Maybe in the new VCD ue4 version/vcd Port as that stuff works in ue4 but VCD ue3 not have a vehicle class or a way to import custom vehicles?
It be nice if that yellow car in the vulcan DLC was drivable so can put bins and buckets on the back of it
Don't crash the car or it might catch fire and explode Like cars do in Simpsons hit n run game
However it be interesting cleaning up blood tyre tracks and burnt rubber stains from janitor dropping the clutch n doing burnouts/dohnuts in it and bodies make nice speed bumps
Think Carmageddon with a touch of GTA5 style vehicles vs VCD with a hint of beam n g drive vehicle destruction so if ya crash it it's gonna fall apart n ya have to clean up the car parts and the oil stains n maybe set fire to the fuel leaking out of the wreakage to blow it up again if janitor survive the crash after flying through the windscreen as VCD vehicle not have seatbelts as no such thing as ohs in VCD:)
Silly game idea but for now at least dynamite makes a nice spaceship=all aboard the missile...oh I meant spaceship so janitor can fly around the solar system cleaning up on different planets:)
That toilet scooter would be perfect in postal 4 lol

Also remember that some wireless keyboard and mouse can be paired with ones phone Bluetooth or use otg cable and plug wireless mouse and keyboard dongle into the otg cable n use keyboard and mouse on your phone and person on your PC use a kB and mouse too???

Life always finds a way to make it work especially if Microsoft broke it
Remote play together also works in BLUESTACKS if One doesn't have a mobile phone the steam link app works on BlueStacks too???
Can ones crappy old laptop run BlueStacks or steam n pair ya phone with it?
If so there's another player who can do split screen co-op on ya wifi
Vcd won't start on laptop cuz laptop a peice of crap no problemo as long as it can run steam it will work even if said laptop has a 3mb video card it will work just use a new steam account on the laptop so there's 2 steam account running over the wifi
Account on the laptop doesn't have to have any games in its steam library especially since laptop too crap to play games on it you can play red dead 2 on it if you want to n the host steam account has the game installed?
Something to think about if want to use more than 1 PC at home vs remote play in any games

Now you can freak out your parents and gross out the whole family when every mobile device and the tv and PC has vcd on the screen!
Just Hide the router and the tv remote so they can't turn it off=muhwahaha

So who's gonna write that VCD remote play together guide for PC and mobile devices so everyone can play co-op with any steam friends instead of reading my s#itty spelling???

A JANITOR is correct when you boot up the level, invite the second player and then change the controller from controller 1 to controller 2 etc from the steam remote play overlay and this will enable the second player to activate spilt screen. Works with 1 controller. Also done without Steam link.
