To be clear, while the game is a failure, it wasn't a money scam. They probably sold around 5,000 copies(I work in the industry and this is about the average for a game like this in Early access) at $10 a copy, and after Steam's cut, it's 7/copy. Divide that by a 3 man team(maybe 4) and then by the 2 years of active development time(before they went absent) and you have less than $6000/year. It would be one of the worst cash grabs in history if it was one. Too many indie developers start making and selling games with little or no business education and experience. Too many are counting on their game to be a smash hit in order to finish it.

To make a successful indie game a developer has to have 2-3 years worth of funding saved up or they have to launch the minimum viable product and test the market to see how strong sales are. The respectable thing to do is when the market doesn't bear your development costs is to remove it from the market and stop taking money from people who expect a finished product. THAT is the only thing that these devs are doing wrong now. THAT is the only cash grab aspect. Right now this game will not suddenly get an influx of cash and the owner knows that he is just taking money from people who expect a finished game. He is doing so to try to recoup some money for himself and the team(thinks he is doing a good thing) but really he is just abusing consumer trust at this point.
