Adding sockets for equipment with sockets possible in game?

I have a good piece of equipment. Added one slot with enchantment, but want at least another as the piece it'll replace has two slots. Paying for enchanting this piece has gotten too expensive now, and I have a few others I want to enchant with magic anvils as well. If someone definitely knows that you cannot add more slots to an equipment with few slots, it would be better to enchant the other pieces of gear instead.

If you want to just experiment and find out for yourself you can always make a save of the game, then try to enchant for another socket. If it doesn't work, close the game from an Alt+Tab exit to Steam, or use the Windows key to go out and close the game. The game will reload with the save you made before you tried the enchantment.
