FATE
WildTangent Response - FATE Has stopped working issue
Greetings from WildTangent!

***UPDATE***
The latest update to FATE appears to have fixed this bug across the board. Please update FATE and your game should work just fine. Bonus: Your saves don't appear to have been corrupted, so for those of you that put in 5 hours of gameplay and hit this bug, you can resume your dungeon crawling.

Thank you all for your patience!
***END OF UPDATE***

First, I want to apologize for the problems some of you have been experiencing. As a gamer myself, there's little that leaves me as frustrated as buying a game and not having it work. The team and I are looking into this to try and isolate the problem and reproduce it, so that we can fix it and get you all playing FATE again as quickly as possible. We did test FATE on Steam on Windows 7 & 8 with 32- and 64-bit systems, and this issue didn’t appear for us prior to launch.

Second, I want to apologize to everyone for the delay in any kind of "official" response. I didn't want to come on the forums and post a bland "we're looking into it ..." message without some kind of helpful update as to what's really going on. So here is what is really going on at WildTangent right now:

  • We have been reading ALL your messages and all the troubleshooting you've been doing on your own. It's been extremely helpful, so THANK YOU, particularly to the folks that have been offering suggestions and advice to other players.

  • We have finally gotten this to happen for us in our test harness that we can now use to try and track down the culprit. Unfortunately, the 'bad' save data we got is loading just fine on a debug build, so this may take a bit to really figure out.

What we would like to get from you, our players:

If you have this crash, please post in this thread the following information:

1) OS version, Service Pack, and 32/64 bit.
2) Network connection
3) Installation location for FATE (default for Steam, or do you have a custom location?)
4) exact steps that led to the problem. (eg, "The game loaded fine, I started playing, I saved/exited, and now the game fails on startup with a runtime error")
5) exact description of the error. I realize that "a Runtime error occurred" is a pretty generic message, but I want to ensure that you're all seeing the SAME error.

Please post those messages to this thread, and that will allow us to keep all the data in one place as we work to solve this issue.

I do not currently have an ETA for when this will be fixed, unfortunately. As soon as we have isolated the problem and have a build that we can test internally, I will let everyone know. This is not what any of us (gamers or developers) wanted for the launch of FATE on Steam, and the team and I will do our best to get this bug squashed in a hurry so that you can all get back to playing FATE.

Again, you have my sincere apologies for all of this, and I promise you we are working to get this fixed, tested, and updated as fast as we absolutely can.

I *just* bought and started playing this game. It ran fine for the first hour, then it suddenly closed. I'm not sure if I accidentally hit the Exit button instead of Resume or if it closed on its own, but after that is when the crashing started. The game would begin loading up, then crash during the first loading screen. I tried verifying the GCFs, restarting Steam, and loading the game with my internet connection off.

I am using Windows 7 x64, service pack 1, and a wireless connection. FATE is installed in the default location. This is the error message I get:

1. Windows 8 64 bit
2. Normal wi-fi connection with internet access.
3. Install location is the Steam install (ProgramDatax86/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Fate)
4. Game played fine at 1080 resolution for about 15 minutes. I saved, stopped, and when I re-launched the game it crashed while loading (loading bar was about halfway) with a "fate.exe had stopped working" error.
5. The error I get is "fate.exe has stopped working and will shutdown" and then the usual "windows will search for a solution if you want, etc.."

Egosoft take note... THIS is how you deal with issues and complaints.

1. Windows 7 SP1 64-bit
2. Normal LAN (wired) connection to ADSL modem.
3. E:\Steam\SteamApps\common\FATE
4. Game worked fine for 4,5 hours before crashing after selecting Save & Quit. Now it crashes every time I try to launch it at first loading screen or if I'm lucky at the continue game screen (screen where you can see character's level and time played).
5. I only get normal "Fate has stopped working. A problem caused program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if solution is available." message. No other messages.
Checking from Event Viewer I found this:

Faulting application name: fate.exe, version: 1.0.0.345, time stamp: 0x529cc810

Thank for the answer !
To me it's the same thing than sephrax ( configuration, error, error message,..)
The download was goof, i played about 1 hour, made a save and quit the game, when i quit the game a message error appeared, (same that #5 written by Sephrax) then after wasn't able to open the game again until i used W98 compatibility - I guess there is some troubles with ntdll.dll file - i download it on my laptop a w7 32 bit, i will look at if trouble happen again
Hang on, it just loaded for me. It recompressed the textures (even though that was supposedly a one-time thing) and reset my settings, but I was able to successfully load my game.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread...

Hi There & thanks for such a professional and helpful response. Just thought I would share that this game is not the only one I've had problems with on Steam. It's just the way it goes... I think we just need to be patient if we want good games on PC & I appreciate all the hard work that goes into it on every level. :-)

1. Windows 7 [64 bit] OS
2. Direct internet connection.
3. Installed in default location for steam games.
4. Starting the game.
5. Game says it's started but no window shows up. Steam log shows I've played 5 hours. This specific problem has happened with one other game on Steam (Lord of the Rings).

Thanks
