It's a really great game, randomly generated dungeon levels, loot and enemies. I recommend it if you're a fan of the genre.
(Also, at $5 that's a good deal IMO)
If you like the Torchlight games, then you'll like Fate as it is basically the precursor to those games. Some of the devs of Fate even joined or started Runic, so you'll be very familar with the feel of the game if you played TL and TL2. Just think Torchlight but more child friendly and that's pretty much what Fate is.
At the cheap price, you can't really go wrong with picking up Fate, especially if you've never played it before and you've played everything else Steam has to offer. Highly recommended!
Same thing with me, too! I remember Fate being the first game I hex edited. I think it was just to give me more money or an item or something.
If you have Torchlight, Vanhelsing, Hammerwatch, Legend of dungeon, Dungeon of the endless, or any of the other games that are more developed versions of this game, I dare say you will not find anything new at all and you will certainly notice you are palying a game that is several steps back in development for games of this genre. Sure at the time it was released it was innovative in many ways: randomly generated dungeons, raisable pets and fishing, and the ability to have your pet go to town to sell and buy items. but in today's gaming age I can't see how anyone would play this and enjoy it when they could just play one of the many more developed games out there.
I suppose if you are running a laptop or a system with very limited resources, or you just have a major boner for this game then go for it. But I would not even recommend it as a nostalgic type game unless you had a serious personal history with the game in the past, if not you will probably just wish it had more to it.
TLDR: Great for what it is and the time it was made. If you have experience with modern rogue-likes or hack-n-slash dungeons such as PoE, Torchlight/Vanhelsing, or Hammerwatch, you will only be let down by the fact that what you see is exactly what you get with this game; and what you get is a very dated dungeoneering experience.
I didn't really have much fun with Fate because it's really ALL about that loot grind as you go further and further down each level. I preferred the combat of Diablo and other Diablo clones and I wasn't much of a fan of the cartoony art style either. There wasn't any real story to speak of either, though I never got around to playing the expansions. It was just an endless trek down floors of a dungeon.
Actually, I'd probably say that no, it isn't better than Torchlight. The lead developer of Fate actually designed Torchlight with the guys from the original Diablo team, so there's that, too.
Very good points that I forgot to bring up, I also find them to be very relevant and true however.
