Mods for fate
I own fate, however i dont have it on steam. I love to make mods to enhance the content of the game, I always make sure my mods work and are appropiately balanced to the game, so they never ruin the game. Is there a way I can upload files to the forum so that others can download them?

Just link them. Though I'm not sure how people will install it, since last I heard Fate Mod Manager didn't work. Its detection method definitely won't work for the Steam version.

Thanks. I dont use mod manager either, I dont trust it. I always install my mods manually and if i do post mods i will definitely give instructions on how to do so.
I also have an older version of fate, where the enitre fate game is self sufficient, e.g. all the save files are in the directory folder with the game. I'm not sure if the newer versions are as easy to get into, but any help is much appreciated.

Apparently the Steam version is still using the WildGames' version of save locations, but with a different folder name. So saves are in %programdata%\WildTangent\FateSteam, along with config files and compressed textures. You might want to grab the game off of WildTangent's site just to make sure the files are compatible (AFAIK the data between the WildGames and Steam version should be the same).

Thanks again, that is helpful. But i have an old enough version where everything, including the saves, is in one folder. So if you would move that folder, it would still work. The only way to be absolutely sure is to buy the fate version on steam as well for 8 bucks :)
That way, I can make specific instructions for steam, find a fate mod hosting site, and just give a link to my file. That would work right?

Pretty much. How's the Steam version, now that you got it?

More or less, im finding it ok. I havent looked into the files too much yet, but it seems very similar to the older version i had, except for compression of textures... and the fact i couldnt import the raw savedata from my opther charachter into this version of thae game which sucks. My characther was a vitality buff... i thre almost all my skill points into vitality bc i used him just to text my mods... but i still liked him, and now i cant use him to test any more mods. Oh well.

Ok. i shrank down the file size from 562MB, to about 110MB. Quite a leap. Just deleted all the irrelevant junk, now ive got to test and make sure i didnt delete any vitals.
And... it just crashed. I'm going to have to see what i mistakenly deleted.

at 250MB it still crashed. I think I am going to have delete one file at a time and test to see if it still works, at this rate.

i deleted one file. ONE FILE! a monsters definition file, which isnt even necessary for my mod... and the entire game crashed. Now ive got two choices: do this the hard way... relocate all the resource data the new content uses, out of the "REALMS" folder it originally came from into other directories, and respec the data files to match the new directories, OR, just leave it at 562MB, which isnt very user friendly, but is a heck of a lot easier. What do you guys think? would you be content downloading an extra 562MB just for the sakes of a mod?

But wait! i just replaced the monsters file that went missing, and fate still crashed! Could it be there is another problem with this particular copy of fate that I have overlooked? I'm going to re-copy my original modded fate (which does still work), and try removing files again. I'll keep you guys posted, but for now ive got to go to work... I'll let you know my progress though.

Are you talking about the sequel to original mod or some other mod? If you are, it's probably easier to write a program to install things.
Bakedtoast Feb 8, 2014 @ 11:51am
Im talking about taking items and dungeons from the sequels, and inputting them into the original game. In fact, it is operational, I have a working version already and i love it. The only problems are A) file size is very large, probably because of irrelevant junk that isnt needed, and B) making instructions that are easy enough for anyone to use when integrating the files.
cyanic Feb 8, 2014 @ 3:08pm
Definitely easier getting a program to do the integration for you. People can download whichever sequel games they like, and you only have to distribute maybe a 2MB file.
Bakedtoast Feb 8, 2014 @ 4:18pm
but then they still have to buy the sequels. I wanted to add this content for them for free.

The way WildTangent games work is the full version is downloaded, and access to it prior to purchasing is controlled by a timed trial. The data files (which are the only things you need) are not protected and fully accessible. Anyway, you don't want to assume risks of copyright violation by distributing the copyrighted game files.
